The river gorge drops as low as 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) below the surrounding glaciated peaks. The name Futaleufú is an indigenous Mapuche word meaning "Big River". Locals refer to the valley as "un paisaje pintado por Dios" — a landscape painted by God.

Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park is a 400,000-hectare (1,000,000-acre) national park in the Palena Province of Chile, created by Tompkins Conservation, which was endowed and led by the American business magnate Doug Tompkins and his wife, former CEO of Patagonia, Inc., Kris Tompkins. Designated a Nature Sanctuary in 2005, Parque Pumalín was Chile's largest private nature reserve and operated as a public-access park, with an extensive infrastructure of trails, campgrounds, and visitor centers. By an accord announced on 18 March 2017, the park was gifted to the Chilean state and became a national park.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Palena Province</span> Province in Los Lagos, Chile

Palena Province is the southernmost administrative area in Chile's Los Lagos Region Los Lagos (X). The area is also called Continental Chiloe or Northern Patagonia, as geographers consider the Palena Province to be the starting point of Chilean Patagonia which extends south from Palena all the way to Tierra del Fuego. Palena Province is remote, beautiful, and difficult to access. In fact, Palena is one of the most sparsely populated provinces in the country and features a stunning geography characterized by steep fjords, wild rivers, hot springs, and numerous snow-capped volcanos. Chile's Austral Highway is not continuous through the jagged geography of Palena Province. Motorists accessing the area by car are required to take two ferries across fjords to cross the province.

Futaleufú is a Chilean town and commune located in Northern Patagonia. Located at the confluence of the Espolon and Futaleufú river valleys, the town is approximately 10 kilometers from the Argentine border. Futaleufú is the provincial capital of Palena Province, Los Lagos Region. Futaleufú, known locally as “Futa,” is a frontier town with a growing tourism industry based on adventure tourism—most specifically whitewater rafting—but also fishing, mountain biking, trekking, and canyoning. Due to its proximity to the Argentine border, Futaleufú is most easily accessed from airports in Esquel and Bariloche, Argentina. Other tourists access the town through the Northern Patagonia Airport in Chaiten, or vía a system of ferries that leave from the closest major Chilean city, Puerto Montt.

Futaleufú National Reserve is a national reserve in the Northern Patagonia section of southern Chile. The park is administered by the CONAF. The Futaleufu National Reserve is located in Palena Province of Los Lagos Region of Chile, southeast of the Futaleufú River and the town of Futaleufu. The southern and eastern boundaries of the reserve are defined by the international border with Argentina. The park includes the headwaters of the Chico River, a scenic tributary of the more famous Futaleufu, and several waterfalls appear inside the park that can be accessed by hiking trails. The reserve also contains the most southern occurrence of Austrocedrus chilensis and is home to some South Andean deer.

Lago Carlota National Reserve is a national reserve of southern Chile's Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region.

Lago Las Torres National Reserve is a national nature reserve of southern Chile's Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region. The reserve is marginally traversed by the Carretera Austral, which borders the eastern shore of Las Torres Lake. The reserve is named for that lake, but it is not contained within the reserve's boundaries. It is located 125 km north of Coyhaique and is bordered by Argentina to the east. Cisnes River approximately marks its northern border.

Lago Peñuelas National Reserve is a national reserve of Chile. The reserve was created around Peñuelas Lake, a freshwater reservoir that provides drinking water to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. The park, which is located in the Valparaíso Region of Chile, was declared a protected area in the year 1952 in order to protect the drainage of the Peñuelas reservoir and dam, built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the Twentieth century. The park, along with La Campana National Park to its north, was designated Campana-Peñuelas Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1984.

Alto Palena Airport is an airport serving Palena, a small town in the mountains of the Los Lagos Region of Chile. Palena is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the Argentina border. The airport is just north of the town, and south of a bend in the Palena River.

Nascentes do Lago Jari National Park is a national park in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. It protects an area of Amazon rainforest in the BR-319 highway area of influence.
