The Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry is a non-profit organization that promotes the interests of the business community in Lagos, Nigeria. It provides a platform for businesses to express their opinions and concerns regarding legislative or other measures affecting trade, industry, commerce, and agriculture. The organization also represents the views of the Lagos business community on the economy as a whole. Its main goal is to support the growth and success of businesses in Lagos by advocating for their interests and providing resources and support. It boasts over 1,500 members with the current Director General being Chinyere Almona. [1]

Founded on December 5, 1888, it was incorporated in 1950 as a non-profit making organization, Limited by Guarantee under the Companies Act of 1948. The Lagos Chamber of Commerce is the pioneer chamber of commerce in Nigeria. [2]

Its prestigious Commerce House building which houses its offices is located in Victoria Island, where most Nigerian corporations have their national headquarters. [3]

Chamber Awards

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry introduced the Chamber Awards in 2014 to recognize, promote and celebrate private and public institutions operating in Nigeria for best business practices, growth through innovations, business sustainability and positive impact on the people/Society.

The award recognized companies in the following industries - Banking, Insurance, Pension Management, E-Payment, Education, Telecoms, Professional Services, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, Trade/Retail Trade, Building & Construction and SMEs.

For the 2015 Awards, Beat 99.9 FM on-air personality, Olisa Adibua and Rhythm 93.7 FM on-air personality & celebrity vlogger, Toke Makinwa were selected as the hosts of the 2015 Lagos Chambers of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) Awards. [4]

International Trade Fair

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry is well known for its annual Lagos International Trade Fair which was launched in 1977. It is said to be the largest trade fair in the West African sub-region and attracts investors from other parts of the world. [5] The trade fair holds in Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan, Lagos Island.

Ambassadors

In October 2014, Lagos Chamber of Commerce unveiled 2face Idibia, Brymo, Vector and Kunle Afolayan as ambassadors. The entertainers were unveiled during an elaborate ceremony at the Commerce House, which is located on Idowu Taylor Street in Victoria Island, Lagos. [6]

Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ, better known as Brymo, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, sonic artist, actor and author who was born and raised in Okokomaiko. Brymo started recording music in 1999 while in secondary school. He signed a recording contract with music label Chocolate City in 2010 but was accused of breaching his contract in 2013. Brymo released his debut studio album Brymstone in 2007. His second studio album The Son of a Kapenta was released in 2012, and was supported by the singles "Ara", "Good Morning" and "Go Hard". His third studio album Merchants, Dealers & Slaves, which was released on 20 October 2013, received positive reviews from music critics and yielded the singles "Down" and "Eko".

Phone Swap is a 2012 Nigerian romance comedy-drama film written by Kemi Adesoye, directed and produced by Kunle Afolayan. It stars Nse Ikpe Etim, Wale Ojo, Joke Silva, Chika Okpala, Lydia Forson and Afeez Oyetoro, and focuses on a series of events unfolding when two polar opposites accidentally exchange phones. The film was conceived after a brief from an advertising agency to create a movie that would cut across ages 15 to 45. It received 4 nominations at the 8th Africa Movie Academy Awards which includes the category Best Nigerian Film and won the award Achievement in Production Design.

October 1 is a 2014 Nigerian thriller film written by Tunde Babalola, produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan, and starring Sadiq Daba, Kayode Olaiya, and Demola Adedoyin. The film is set in the last months of Colonial Nigeria in 1960. It recounts the fictional story of Danladi Waziri (Daba), a police officer from Northern Nigeria, investigating a series of killings of young women in the remote Western Nigeria village of Akote just before 1 October 1960 – the date Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule.

The Headies is a music awards show established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry. The annual ceremony features performances by established and promising artists. It is broadcast live on HipTV to viewers across Nigeria. The first and second editions of The Headies were held at the Muson Center in Onikan, Lagos State. Between 2010 and 2012, the awards were held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. The 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards was the 7th edition of the ceremony. The event was held on September 2, 2012 at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, New York City. The event was hosted by Funke Akindele and Ayo Makun. Winners included Wizkid, Davido, Don Jazzy and Tineh Tempah.

The 2010 Nigeria Entertainment Awards was the 5th edition of the ceremony and was held on 18 September 2010. The event took place at BMCC Tribeca Performing Art Center, New York City. Omawumi and Dagrin led the nomination list with 5 and 4 awards respectively.

Auteuring Nollywood: Critical Perspectives on The Figurine is a book released on 31 July 2014, detailing the scholarly analysis of events in the 2009 film The Figurine directed by Kunle Afolayan. The book is the first book in the history of Nigerian Cinema to be devoted to the work of a single Nigerian film director and it contains scholarly essays, which explores "the thematic focus and cinematic style employed in The Figurine". It also contains interviews with the cast and crew of the film and insights into the African and Nigerian film industry. Since its release, the book has been getting rave reviews from critics, educators and film scholars.

The Headies 2014 was the ninth edition of The Headies. It took place on 14 December 2014, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Themed "Feel the Passion", the show was hosted by Toke Makinwa and Basketmouth. It was initially scheduled to hold on 25 October 2014. Bovi was initially announced as one of the hosts, but ended up not hosting due to him being booked for another show. On 30 September 2014, nominations were announced during a press briefing at the HipTV office in Allen, Lagos. Kcee, Olamide and Phyno led the nominations with five each. Tiwa Savage, Oritse Femi and The Mavins followed closely with four apiece. Yemi Alade was nominated for Song of the Year, Best Pop Single and Next Rated. Olamide, Patoranking and Davido each took home two awards apiece. Don Jazzy won the Producer of the Year plaque, while Sir Victor Uwaifo received the Hall of Fame recognition.

The Lagos International Trade Fair (LITF) is the largest international exhibition in West Africa. The Trade Fair is the premier International Trade Fair in Nigeria with the spectacular 10-day event usually starting on the first Friday of November, annually.

Toki Mabogunje is a Nigerian lawyer, broadcaster, poet and business consultant. She is the 3rd female president of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the founder Toki Mabogunje & Co. Toki is a member of the governing council, the World Chamber of Federation. She is a law graduate from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife. She earned her LLM in International Business Law from the University of Exeter, England. Mabogunje was honored in 2014 as the Personality of the year for World Theater Day and Cultural Ambassador by NANTAP
