The Lagos State Ministry of Environment is the state government ministry, charged with the responsibility to plan, devise and implement the state policies on Environmental Management. [4] [5]
Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first elected Governor of Lagos State, carved out the Ministry of Environment from the then Ministry of Works and Transport. The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning merged with the Ministry of Physical Planning to become the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning. [6] The former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,separated the Office of Environment from Physical Planning in 2003 and he upgraded the office of Environment to a Ministry. [7]
The Ministry's main objective is to build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment that would promote tourism, economic growth, and citizen well-being.

During the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the office of Environment was separated from Physical Planning and upgraded the present office of the Environment to a Ministry. In the year 2005, two offices were created under the Ministry namely: Office of Environmental Services (OES) and Office of Drainage Services (ODS).
In 2015, following an Executive Order by His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the two offices which were OES and ODS were merged into a single Ministry which was the Ministry of Environment. In January 2018, the Office of Drainage Services was moved out of Ministry of Environment to Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) which was under the Ministry of Works. This reform in the Ministry of Environment was during the Akinwunmi Ambode administration.

Lagos Rail Mass Transit is a rapid transit system in Lagos State. The rail system is managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). The railway equipment including electric power, signals, rolling stock, and fare collection equipment will be provided by the private sector under a concession contract. LAMATA is responsible for policy direction, regulation, and infrastructure for the network. The first section of the network, Phase I of the Blue Line, was originally planned to be completed in 2011, though the construction has suffered many delays caused by shortage of funds and change of government. The Blue Line opened on September 4, 2023 and the Red Line opened on February 29, 2024.

The 2019 Lagos gubernatorial election was conducted on 9 March to choose the Governor of Lagos State. The election was held concurrently with various state level elections. Incumbent APC Governor Akinwunmi Ambode lost to the APC flag bearer Babajide Sanwo-Olu at a direct primary election in October 2018 and hence ineligible to run for second term under APC. Babajide Sanwo-Olu won in a landslide against Jimi Agbaje of the PDP who had previously run unsuccessfully for Lagos state governor twice. From 1999, Lagos state has been governed by AD, AC, then ACN, three parties which subsequently formed part of the coalition that birthed the APC in 2013.
His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, is the 15th Oniru of Iruland. He was born to late Chief Taoreed Lawal Akapo, the Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and Olori Muinat Olabisi Abeni Ajasa. He is from the Ojora, Aromire, Shokun and Abisogun branch of Oniru royal families of Lagos State. He became the 15th Oniru of Iruland on 7 June 2020 after the death of Oba Idowu Oniru in September 2019. He was presented with the staff of Office by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on 7 June. 2020. Prior to his enthronement, he was the Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos State.
The 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Lagos State, concurrent with elections to the Lagos State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was eligible to run for re-election and was renominated by his party.
