Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is the agency in charge of boats, ferries operations and water transportation in Lagos state. [1] [2] The agency provide alternative to escaping Lagos traffic by overseeing water transport. [3] LASWA partnered with the Dolphin Swim School to train 100 students across 4 public schools on water safety and swimming guides through the Water Savvy Kids Programme in 2021. [4]
According to a press release by the General Manager, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel in 2021, LASWA recruited new water guards who were distributed across different terminals and inland water ways in Lagos and trained to ensure safety of boat operators and ferry passengers. [5]
In 2023, due to high water waves obstructing free movement of ferries, the water authority suspended her activities at Ipakodo ferry terminal, Ikorodu to ensure safety of the users in that area. [6] Also in 2023, Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, handed over Ijegun-Egba, Liverpool, Isalu-Ajido, Marina Badagry, and Ilashe Jetties to LASWA to provide alternative to land transport to serve as source of business for the residents. [7] LASWA collaborated with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in further ensuring safety within water areas in the state in 2024. [8]

The MBTA ferry system is a public boat service providing water transportation in Boston Harbor. It is operated by Hornblower Cruises under contract to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). In 2023, the system had a ridership of 1,260,000, or about 5,000 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2024. The system has six routes that terminate in downtown Boston. Year-round routes run to Hingham directly (F1) and via Hull (F2H), and to the Charlestown Navy Yard (F4). Seasonal routes run to Lynn (F3), Winthrop (F5), and East Boston (F6).
Ikorodu is a city in Lagos State, Nigeria. It is located to the north-east of Lagos, along the Lagos Lagoon and shares boundary with Ogun State. With a population of over 1 million inhabitants, Ikorodu is currently the 12th largest city in Nigeria and growing at a rate of 5.26% annually, it is projected to reach 1.7 million inhabitants by 2035, It is the 2nd largest local government in Lagos State. Kochi Water Metro (KWM) is a ferry transport system serving the Greater Kochi region in Kerala, India. It is the first water metro system in India and the first integrated water transport system of this size in Asia. When fully operational, it will connect Kochi’s 10 island communities with the mainland through a fleet of 78 battery-operated electric hybrid boats operating along 38 terminals and 16 routes spanning 76 kilometres. On 26 May 2021, an overloaded and overcrowded vessel carrying at least 160 passengers broke into two and sank after hitting an object in the Nigerian part of the Niger River. The boat was travelling between Niger State and Wara in Kebbi State when it sank. The incident left at least 98 dead.
The Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) is responsible for regulating utility infrastructure in Lagos state. The goal of the agency is to ensure that standards and effectiveness are maintained in infrastructural development. The agency is a parastatal established by the "Lagos State government law NO 13 of July and published in the official gazette NO 23 volume 37 of 27th August, 2004", under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. The Ogbaru boat disaster, also called the Ogbaru boat mishap or Anambra boat mishap, was the accidental sinking of a boat on the Niger River in Nigeria on 7 October 2022, causing 76 deaths. It took place during the 2022 Nigeria floods.

The agency works alongside other water regulating bodies such as Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC), and Waterways Assets Development Services (WADS) Limited to ensure safety protection of boats, ferries and their crews, as well as maintenance of water body. They are also responsible for sanctioning the illegal operations in inland waterways.

It is certified by the Nigeria Aquatics Federation and their activities are endorsed by the Lagos State Sports Commission. The swimming league organize inter-school tournaments in lagos state grooming the young ones ahead of international games such as Olympics
