Lakeview Terrace is a set of row houses, apartments, and a high-rise residential building in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. Established in 1935, the project culminated in the opening of a 1973 high-rise building called Lakeville Tower. [1] The apartment tower is 208 feet tall and contains 19 stories. [2] The complex is notable for being one of the first public housing projects in the country.

Public housing was vital following the rising population of Cleveland in the 1920s and 1930s. Overcrowding in the central areas of city was decried and it was reasoned that the local government must intervene in some way to minimize the negative effects of this overcrowding. This demand led to the planning and development of what would become the Lakeview Terrace complex. It was commissioned by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority's first director Ernest J. Bohn in 1935 to supplement the declining availability of low-cost housing in the metropolitan area of Cleveland, the complex would include a community center to engage residents in issues relating to neighborhood safety and education. [3] It is also worthy of mention that Lakeview was one of the first attempts to offer lower cost housing for poorer residents in the urban center. The formula regarding the establishment of public housing that Cleveland pioneered would be adopted by the urban cities of Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Philadelphia and many others. In fact, many cities have their own either mini or mega versions of Lakeview. At the time of its construction, Cleveland was praised for being on the cutting edge of urban dwelling planning. The entire complex was designed by Joseph L. Weinberg, William H. Conrad, and Wallace G. Teare and was entirely fireproofed throughout. [1]

The Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) is a governmental organization responsible for the ownership and management of low-income housing property in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The organization was founded in 1933, making it the first housing authority in the United States.

Ernest J. Bohn was an American politician. He was a leading figure in public housing from the 1930s until his death. He spent the majority of his life promoting the creation of public housing in Ohio, particularly in Cleveland, and his work created standards copied across the nation. Thanks to his efforts, Cleveland became a leader in public housing, creating the first public housing authority, Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority, and creating some of the largest public housing developments in the nation.

Lakeview Tower

The main focus is the 1973-erected 211 unit Lakeview Tower. The residential tower (the second tallest public housing structure in the city after the Willson Tower on East 55th and Chester) stands as a symbol to Cleveland's commitment to safe, clean, and affordable public housing in generally under served urban communities. Its mass dominates the skyline in Ohio City and the Flats as it sits on a hill that overlooks downtown Cleveland. It is called Lakeview Tower because it looks out over Lake Erie to the north. In 2015, the Northeast Ohio Apartment Association gave the tower its Silver Award due to its promotion of safe and high professional standards. [4]

The Willson Tower is a high-rise residential building in Cleveland, Ohio. It is 210 feet tall, and was built in 1971. The building is owned by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority and provides public housing one and two-bedroom apartments. It is named after Hiram Willson, a prominent lawyer in Cleveland in the 19th century. The Willson is on East 55th Street near Cleveland's East Technical High School.

Bohn Towers

The Bohn Towers is a 1972-erected 204-foot 22-story high-rise apartment building complex in the Reserve Square area of downtown Cleveland. It is named after one of the former directors of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, Ernest J. Bohn. He directed the agency responsible for public housing in the urban area of Cleveland from 1933 until 1968. The Bohn is known for its modern style apartment dwelling design, which almost approaches the brutalist style. The Bohn sits directly east of the Reserve Square East and West Towers.

The Parkview Apartments is a 1926-built 213 foot former Allerton Hotel high-rise that was converted into apartments in downtown Cleveland's Nine-Twelve District that sits just south of the Reserve Square complex. The building is in the Renaissance revival style and is facaded in detailed red brick. Erected in the 1920s the building demonstrates elaborate decorational motifs and castle-like design that evokes regal elegance throughout the structure.The Parkview also features a tower or spire at its apex.

nuCLEus is a proposed 54-story, 650-foot (200 m) mixed-used development complex planned for the Gateway District of downtown Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It sits on top of a parking structure that was built before the tower. It is the second tallest building in the Warehouse District after the Crittenden Apartments.

The 172-foot, 14-story high-rise is located at the corner of East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue in the city's Nine-Twelve District, alongside other historic buildings such as Rose Building, the City Club Building, the Union Commerce Building, the Cleveland Trust Company Building, The 9 Cleveland and The Cleveland Athletic Club Building.

Cressingham Gardens

Cressingham Gardens is a council garden estate in Lambeth. It is located on the southern edge of Brockwell Park. It comprises 306 dwellings, a mixture of four, three and two-bedroom houses, and one-bedroom apartments. It was designed at the end of the 1960s by the Lambeth Borough Council Architect Edward Hollamby, and built at the start of the 1970s. In 2012 Lambeth Council proposed demolishing the estate, to replace the terraced houses by apartment blocks. Most of the apartments would then be for sale to the private sector. The residents, those in Lambeth who wish to prevent the gentrification of the borough, and those who want to conserve what they believe to be important architectural heritage, are campaigning to prevent its demolition.

The Beacon (Cleveland)

The Beacon is a skyscraper in downtown Cleveland that began construction at 515 Euclid Avenue in late 2017. The tower will be 355 feet (108 m) tall, with approval from the city council to exceed the city's 250 feet (76 m) limit. The building will be located on the GCRTA Euclid Corridor Rapid Bus Transit line that leads from Public Square to the University Circle district on the south east side of the city
