Lanka Bandaranayake is a Sri Lankan filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, actor, and theatre artist who mainly works in Sri Lankan cinema. She is known for the short film Tradition (2016).

Early life

Lanka was born in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. She finished her Bachelor of Arts degree (External) in 2016 from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, [1] and in 2019 she received the ITEC scholarship to study a filmmaking certificate course at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institution in Kolkata. [1] She received a Chevening Scholarship in 2021 for her Master's Degree in Directing Film and Television, which she completed with Distinction at Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom. [2]

Career

Lanka started her career as a theatre artist in 1998 before making her breakthrough in filmmaking in 2016. She has been working as an actress and costume designer in theatre, teledramas, and films. [3]

In 2008, she was cast in Security, a short theatre play that was directed by Hewage Bandula. It was staged at the Colombo Theatre Fest for Young Audiences, 2008. [4]

Recognition for short films (2016–2021)

Her first short film, Tradition, was selected for more than 40 international film festivals, including the 71st Locarno Film Festival (Open Doors Screenings) 2018 in Switzerland. [5] [6] [7] 21st Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival in Canada, [8] the 16th IVY Film Festival in the US, [9] the 15th Filmfest Düsseldorf in Germany, [10] 14th VIS Vienna Shorts in Austria, Cannes Corner at the 70th Cannes Film Festival in France, [11] UK and other international film festivals. [12]

In 2019, she directed her second short film, Inheritance (2020), with the partnership of the British Council of Sri Lanka in the Female Filmmakers First program, and the film was produced by Agenda 14. [13]

Lanka was a jury member for fiction at the Sound & Image Challenge International Festival in 2018 and 2019 [14] in Macau, and in 2019 she curated films from Sri Lankan Female Filmmakers. [15] Her third short film, Mahasona (2021), was officially selected for various film festivals. [16] [17] [18]

In 2020, Lanka directed "The Delivery" chapter on the anthology film Goodnight Colombo, a project borne during the initial phase of the pandemic. The Goethe-Institut, Sri Lanka and Agenda 14 had been eager to restart the Film Forum by showcasing a special preview of Goodnight Colombo. [19]

Feature film debut (2021–present)

In 2021, her debut feature film, The Hail, was selected by the Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship program at Global Media Makers in Los Angeles. [20] [21] During the program, she developed her debut feature film project, The Hail (Working Title), with Hollywood mentors and script consultants in Los Angeles. [2]

She was married to the most prolific Sri Lankan film director Dr. Lester James Peries.

Upatissa Atapattu Bandaranayake Wasala Mudiyanse Ralahamilage Shirani Anshumala Bandaranayake, known as Shirani Bandaranayake, served as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. Although a qualified lawyer, she has never practiced law. After university Bandaranayake entered academia, holding a number of senior positions at the University of Colombo, including associate professor of law and the dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo. She was first appointed to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1996, becoming Sri Lanka's first female Supreme Court Judge. Bandaranayake was appointed chief justice in May 2011 following the mandatory retirement of Asoka de Silva. Bandaranayake was controversially impeached by Parliament and then removed from office by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2013. and on 28 January 2015 the government of Sri Lanka, had removed all obstacles for Bandaranayake to hold her position as the 43rd Chief Justice by the President Maithripala Sirisena, on the ground that her 2013 impeachment was unlawful and as such the appointment of Mohan Peiris, her successor, was void Ab initio. This paved the way for Bandaranayake to resume duties on 28 January 2015. She retired from the position on 29 January 2015, one day after her reappointment, claiming support for a free and fair Judiciary in Sri Lanka.

With You, Without You is a 2012 Sri Lankan film written and directed by prolific Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, and produced by Lasantha Navaratne, Mohammad Adamaly and Prasanna Vithanage for Akar Films. Deshamanya Vajira Chitrasena is a veteran Sri Lankan traditional dancer, choreographer and teacher. Vajira is regarded as Sri Lanka's first prima ballerina. She is the first Sri Lankan woman to practice the traditional Kandyan dance which was traditionally performed only by men. Vajira is credited for creating brand for female style of Kandyan dancing and set the tone for women to become ritual dancers. She was married to Chitrasena who was a well known legendary dancer and dance guru. On 26 January 2020, she along with late professor Indra Dassanayake was conferred with the Padma Shri award which is one of the highest Indian civilian awards coinciding with the 71st Republic Day of India.

Kala Suri Barbara Sansoni was a Sri Lankan designer, artist, colourist, entrepreneur, and writer. She was known for her works in architecture, textile designs, and handwoven panels. She founded the Barefoot textile company, a company that is highly acclaimed for its handloom fabric. She also served as the chairperson and chief designer of Barefoot Pvt. Ltd for several years.
