The Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) is an annual film festival held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The festival has partnered with the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) since its inaugural edition in 2006. [1] It aims to introduce Asian cinema to a wider audience and provides a space for arts, culture, and tourism.

History

Several Indonesian filmmakers, Garin Nugroho, Ifa Isfansyah, Budi Irawanto, Yosep Anggi Noen, Ajish Dibyo, Dyna Herlina and Ismail Basbeth along with NETPAC curator Philip Cheah, initiated the festival.

The first edition of the festival was held from 7 to 12 August 2006, about three months after the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake. [2] Kompas noted that the inaugural edition marked the recovery of Yogyakarta post-earthquake. [3] Meanwhile, Eric Sasono of Tempo noted that the festival created a new film market to develop the Asian cinema even further. [4]

As of 2022, the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival is organized in various sections:

In 2024, the festival debuted a new program, JAFF Market, an initiative aimed at reshaping the Indonesian film industry by fostering networking and collaboration among various sectors. [5]

Awards

The most prestigious award given at JAFF is the Golden Hanoman Award for best film. As of 2022, the festival has presented the following awards: [6]

The 18th annual Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival was held on 25 November to 2 December 2023 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The films were screened at the Empire XXI theatres and online through streaming service KlikFilm, meanwhile other fringe events were held at the LPP Yogyakarta.

The 16th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival was held on 27 November to 4 December 2021 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The festival returned to be held offline at the Empire XXI, after a year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The festival partnered with streaming service KlikFilm for online screenings.

The 14th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival was held on 19 to 23 November 2019 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 107 films from 23 countries were screened during the festival. Black comedy fantasy film Abracadabra opened the festival and it closed with Bradley Liew's Hotel Acacia.

This year marks the inaugural edition of JAFF Market, an initiative aimed at reshaping the Indonesian film industry by fostering networking and collaboration among various sectors.

The 13th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival was held from 27 November to 4 December 2018 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 137 films from 27 countries were screened during the festival. Drama film The Man from the Sea opened the festival and it closed with Sri Lankan anthology film Her. Him. The Other. The festival's most prestigious award was presented to drama film 27 Steps of May.

The 12th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival was held from 1 to 8 December 2017 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 114 films from 24 countries were screened during the festival. Garin Nugroho's Nyai opened the festival and it closed with Kirsten Tan's drama film Pop Aye. The year's edition included a new competition section called Indonesian Screen Awards which honored the achievement of Indonesian feature films.

The 11th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival took place from 28 November to 3 December 2016 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 138 films from 27 countries were screened during the festival. The festival opened with Pritagita Arianegara's feature directorial debut Salawaku and closed with Nurlan Abdykadyrov's Travelling with the Bomb.

The Indonesian Screen Awards is a competitive section held during the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. The section honors achievements in Indonesian cinema across six categories, Best Film, Best Directing, Best Performance, Best Editing, and Best Storytelling. Short films were also part of the competition during the inaugural edition in 2017.
