Larry Lavender

Larry Lavender is an American dancer and dance scholar. He is the author of the book Dancers Talking Dance: Critical Evaluation in the Choreography Class.

Biography

Lavender did not begin training in dance until he was a college student. [1] He has a Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from the University of California, Irvine and a Ph.D. in Dance Education from New York University.

Lavender served as Head of Dance and Director of the Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Program at the University of New Mexico before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. [2] [3] From 2002 until 2006 Lavender served as Head of the Dance Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. [1] In 2006 he was succeeded by Jan Van Dyke as Department Head and joined the teaching faculty in the department. His research focuses on dance criticism, performance art, dance theory, and choreography. [4] [5] [6] [1] He also teaches Master of Arts courses in the Liberal Studies Program and the Llyod International Honors College at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Lavender is a choreographic mentor for the Montreal Danse Choreography Research Project. [7]

In 1996 he wrote the book Dancers Talking Dance: Critical Evaluation in the Choreography Class. [8]

Three College Observatory (TCO) is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and Guilford College (GC). Built in 1979, it is located 10 kilometers (6 mi) south of Graham, North Carolina (USA), in the Cane Creek Mountains. The observatory, designed by W. Edward Jenkins, was funded with a $250,000 grant, however, it would cost $1.5 million to replace it today. The observatory's primary instrument is a 32 in (81 cm) Ritchey-Chrétien reflecting telescope attached to an equatorial mount. It was built by Sigma Research and installed at TCO in 1981. TCO is used by UNCG for instruction and outreach. It continues to be the largest telescope in North Carolina and ones of the largest telescopes in the southeast.

Kiss is dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Previously, he was a professor of biology and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Mississippi. and distinguished professor and chair of the botany department at Miami University. He has worked with NASA since 1987 and served as principal investigator on eight spaceflight experiments on the Space Shuttle, the former Russian space station Mir, and on the International Space Station. His research focuses on the sensory physiology of plants in space. He received the NASA Outstanding Public Leadership Medal in 2014. In 2021, Asteroid Kiss 8267 was named in his honor, a recognition that coincided with his receipt of the 2021 COSPAR International Cooperation Medal. His international collaboration on a spaceflight project with NASA and the European Space Agency has led to the discovery of novel sensory mechanisms in plants.
