Larry Sykes (born April 11, 1973) is an American former professional basketball player born in Toledo, Ohio. He played briefly in the National Basketball Association (NBA) after a college career for the Xavier Musketeers.

A 6'9" power forward [1] from Xavier University, [2] [3] [4] [5] Sykes appeared in one game for the Boston Celtics during the 1995-96 NBA season. He tallied two rebounds and one turnover in two minutes of action. [6] Sykes also played for the Rockford Lightning [7] [8] and Fort Wayne Fury [9] of the Continental Basketball Association.

Sykes later became an assistant coach at Lakota East High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the girls varsity basketball team. [10]

In 2013 he was elected Toledo City Council, however he was defeated in 2021 after pleading guilty to bribery charges. [11] [12]

Personal life

Sykes' uncle, Fred Foster, played eight years in the NBA with five teams from 1969 to 1977. [13]

The Xavier Musketeers men's basketball team represents Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The school's team currently competes in the Big East Conference, and are coached by Sean Miller. Xavier has appeared in the NCAA tournament 29 times, 16 times in the 18 tournaments between 2001 and 2018. On March 11, 2018, Xavier earned its first ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Xavier is also a two-time winner of the NIT, with their most recent championship coming in 2022.

The Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Year is an award given to the Horizon League's most outstanding player. The award was first given following the 1979–80 season, the first year of the conference's existence. Seven players have won the award multiple times: Byron Larkin, Brian Grant, Rashad Phillips, Alfredrick Hughes, Keifer Sykes, Loudon Love, and Antoine Davis. Hughes, unlike the other four who each won twice, was awarded the player of the year on three occasions.

The 1958 Xavier Musketeers football team competed in the 1958 college football season as an independent for Xavier University. The team was coached by Harry Connolly and played their home games at Xavier Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Erik Martin is an American basketball coach and former professional player, currently serving as head coach for South Carolina State. A native of California, Martin played one season of college basketball at TCU before transferring to Santa Ana College, a junior college in California where he was a first-team All-State selection. In 1991 he joined the University of Cincinnati, and with the Bearcats he reached the Final Four during the 1992 NCAA tournament. After going undrafted in the 1993 NBA draft he played for various CBA teams and abroad in South Korea and Taiwan. He also earned two selections in the United States national team: he won the silver medal at the 1995 Pan American Games and the gold medal during the 1997 Tournament of the Americas. After retiring as a player he has held several assistant coach jobs, mainly for Bob Huggins, first at Kansas State and later at West Virginia.

The 2020–21 Xavier Musketeers men's basketball team represented Xavier University during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season as a member of the Big East Conference. Led by third-year head coach Travis Steele, they played their home games at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. They finished the season 13-8, 6-7 in Big East Play to finish in 7th place. They lost in the first round of the Big East tournament to Butler.
