Lars Fause (born 20 February 1965) is a Norwegian prosecutor and civil servant serving as the governor of Svalbard since 2021.
Fause is originally from Balsfjord,a municipality in Troms. [1] Fause graduated from the University of Tromsø in 1991 with a Master of Studies in Law. [2] Much of his family lives in Tromsø,where Fause resides when not in Svalbard. [3]
Following his graduation,Fause worked for the Oslo Police District as an assistant. [2] He also worked for a year as a police lawyer for the Troms Police District,and for the following two years at the Trondenes District Court as an assistant judge. [2] Fause worked from 1996 to 2002 as a public prosecutor at the public prosecution offices of Troms og Finnmark,and he received a promotion to the position of chief prosecutor in 2003. [2]
In 2008,Fause accepted a position as deputy governor of Svalbard,which he held until 2011. [4] He made headlines in October 2008 for becoming the first person to deny a person residence in Svalbard:a 28-year-old man who was said to be behind "many crimes". [5] After leaving office,he returned to his former position as chief prosecutor in Troms og Finnmark. [2] He held this position in his second stint from 2011 to 2020, [2] when he resigned to avoid a conflict of interest with his spouse. [6]
Fause took office as governor on 24 June 2021,following the departure of term-limited Governor Kjerstin Askholt. [2] He was selected over several other applicants,including judges Jørn Holme and Cecilie Østensen Berglund.[ citation needed ] He is limited to a maximum of two terms of three years each,according to the Svalbard Treaty,upon which point he would not be eligible for a third term. [7]
Fause is the first governor of Svalbard to have the gender-neutral title Sysselmester instead of the traditional masculine title Sysselmannen; [7] both words translate to English as 'governor',but the change was required as part of Norway's effort to replace gendered governmental titles. [8]
Troms is a county in northern Norway. On 1 January 2020 it was merged with the neighboring Finnmark county to create the new Troms og Finnmark county. This merger was reversed by the government resulting from the 2021 Norwegian parliamentary election on 1 January 2024.

Sørkjosen Airport is a regional airport located at the village of Sørkjosen in Nordreisa Municipality in Tromsk county,Norway,about 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) from the municipal center of Storslett. Owned and operated by the state-owned Avinor,it handled 15,198 passengers in 2014. The airport has a 880-meter (2,890 ft) runway and is served by Widerøe,which operates regional routes using the Dash 8-100 to Tromsø,and some communities and towns in Finnmark on public service obligation contracts. The airport opened in 1974 and was originally served using de Havilland Canada Twin Otter aircraft. Dash 8s were introduced in 1995 and two years later ownership was transferred from Nordreisa Municipality to the state.
Mehamn Airport is a regional airport serving the village of Mehamn in Gamvik Municipality in Finnmark county,Norway. It also serves the villages Kjøllefjord and Gamvik. The airport is 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) outside of the village of Mehamn and is owned and operated by the state-owned Avinor. The tower is remotely controlled from Bodø.

The Hålogaland Court of Appeal is one of six courts of appeal in the Kingdom of Norway. The Court is located in the city of Tromsø. The court has jurisdiction over the counties of Nordland,Troms,and Finnmark as well as the island territories of Jan Mayen and Svalbard. These areas constitute the judicial district of Hålogaland,which has nearly a half a million residents. This court can rule on both civil and criminal cases that are appealed from one of its subordinate district courts. Court decisions can be,to a limited extent,appealed to the Supreme Court of Norway. The court has 16 full-time judges plus a number of other support staff members. The chief judicial officer of the court is currently Monica Hansen Nylund. The court is administered by the Norwegian National Courts Administration.

However,in 2017 the government decided to abolish the current counties of Norway and to replace them with fewer,larger administrative regions. Johannes Gerckens Bassøe was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant. He is known as the first Governor of Svalbard,assuming office in October 1925,although there had been an Acting Governor since August. Bassøe was later County Governor of Troms and Vestfold.
TromsøAirport,Skattøra,also known by its military designation Skattøra Naval Air Station was a water aerodrome and air base situated at Skattøra in the city of Tromsøin TromsøMunicipality in Troms county,Norway. Construction began in 1938 and the aerodrome was in use until 1975. At its peak it was the largest water airport in Northern Europe.
Sandra Konstance Nygård Borch is a Norwegian politician who served as the minister of research and higher education from 2023 to 2024 until her resignation over the extensive plagiarism of her master's thesis. As minister she had launched a crackdown on students' reuse of their own texts,so-called "self-plagiarism," leading to criticism from many academics who argued that reuse of one's own work is not plagiarism or research misconduct. She previously served as minister of agriculture and food from 2021 to 2023. A member of the Centre Party,she served as the leader of the Centre Youth from 2011 to 2013,while simultaneously serving as a deputy MP from her home constituency of Troms from 2009 to 2013. She was elected a permanent representative in 2017. In January 2024 it was revealed that significant parts of her master's thesis had been plagiarised. She announced her resignation in the evening of 19 January 2024. In March 2024 she lost her degree from the University of Tromsø.
Cecilie Myrseth is a Norwegian psychologist and politician for the Labour Party. She is currently the minister of fisheries since 2023. She is also a member of the Storting for Troms since 2017,and previously chaired the Troms county cabinet from 2015 to 2017.
Troms og Finnmark was a county in northern Norway that existed from 2020 to 2023. The county was established on 1 January 2020 as the result of a regional reform. It was the largest county by area in Norway,encompassing about 75,000 square kilometres (29,000 sq mi),and was formed by the merger of the former Finnmark and Troms counties in addition to Tjeldsund Municipality from Nordland county.
