The Las Vegas Gamblers were a semi-professional ice hockey team from Las Vegas, Nevada. The club was a founding member of the California-Nevada Hockey League and, by all accounts, the first formal ice hockey team in the state of Nevada. [1]

History

In the late-1960s, the Teamsters Union was in charge of construction in Las Vegas and one of their projects was the city's first indoor ice rink, the Ice Palace. [2] While the arena had no team in mind when it was built, a semi-pro club was soon formed and the team called themselves the 'Gamblers'. By the fall of 1968, the team was able to come to terms with three other teams in California and Reno to form the California-Nevada Hockey League (Cal-Neva) and played three seasons. While the people who showed up for the games were enthusiastic, the Gamblers were a somewhat esoteric form of entertainment in Vegas as the time and with competition like Elvis Presley, Liberace and Tom Jones taking up most of the attention, only a few hundred people would attend the games.

In 1971, with the team in dire financial straits, the Gamblers needed a new influx of cash. Casino magnate Ralph Engelstad, who had played college hockey at North Dakota, [3] took control of the team and changed the name to the 'Outlaws'. Engelstad changed the course of the club but some of his actions irked the other league members. After the Gamblers were caught violating league rules several times, the Outlaws were expelled and all of their results for the year were retroactively wiped out. Now operating solely as an independent club, Engelstad was able to arrange matches with US national team during the run up to the 1972 Winter Olympics as well as several clubs from Europe and increase the profile of the club. By the mid-70's, the team was experiencing troubles both on and off the ice as players were reported to have behaved poorly during their trip to Germany. However, the bigger issue was the spat between Engelstad and the owner of the Ice Palace. After 1975, the club lost access to the rink. Initially, Engelstad planned to build his own rink in the region and continue running the club, however, no plans were ever set in motion and the Outlaws ceased to exist.

The West Coast Hockey League was a professional minor ice hockey league active in the western United States from 1995 to 2003. The number of teams ranged from six to nine. The teams were located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada and Washington.

Klondike Hotel and Casino was a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, in the United States. The property began as the Kona Kai Motel in 1962, and was purchased by Ralph Engelstad in 1969. The motel was sold to John Woodrum, who renamed it as the Klondike Inn in 1976. A casino was eventually added, and the Klondike became popular among local residents. In 2005, the Klondike was sold to Royal Palm Las Vegas, which planned to replace it with a casino and condo hotel resort known as Paramount Las Vegas. The Klondike closed in June 2006, and was demolished in March 2008. Royal Palm Las Vegas had difficulty obtaining financing for the Paramount project, and the land was put up for sale later in 2008. A Harley-Davidson dealership opened on the former Klondike property in 2014.

The Western States Hockey League (WSHL) was a junior ice hockey league established in 1993. It was sanctioned by the United Hockey Union, the junior hockey branch of the Amateur Athletic Union. Previously, it was sanctioned by USA Hockey from 1994 to 2011. Teams played approximately 50 games in the regular season schedule, mimicking what players would experience at the collegiate level. As of January 2022, there are no active teams in the league following the creation of the Can-Am Junior Hockey League by former WSHL teams.

The Las Vegas metropolitan area is home to many sports, most of which take place in the unincorporated communities around Las Vegas rather than in the city itself. Currently, the Las Vegas Valley has three major league professional teams: the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League (NHL), which began play in 2017 as the region's first major pro team, the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) which began play in 2020 after relocating from Oakland, California, and the Las Vegas Aces of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB) plan to move to Las Vegas to play at a new ballpark which is estimated to be complete by 2028. When this relocation happens, Las Vegas will have progressed from being the largest market in the U.S. with no teams in the men's major professional leagues to being one of the smallest markets with at least three such teams within less than a decade. In addition, the National Basketball Association has publicly confirmed Las Vegas is being considered for an expansion franchise, which would potentially make Las Vegas by far the fastest market to progress from no teams in the Big Four leagues to having teams in all four leagues.

The league operated as the California-Nevada Hockey League from 1968 to 1972.

Santa Fe Station is a hotel and casino located on North Rancho Drive in Las Vegas, Nevada. The casino is owned by Station Casinos and is located on 36 acres (15 ha) of land. The hotel-casino originally opened as the Santa Fe in 1991, and for several years included the only ice rink in Las Vegas. The Santa Fe was involved in a labor dispute with Culinary Workers Union that began in 1993 and lasted into 2000, when the resort was sold to Station Casinos. The 1991 outdoor National Hockey League (NHL) game in Las Vegas was an exhibition pre-season game between the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings that took place on September 27, 1991, on an outside rink built over the parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel and casino. This was the first official outdoor NHL game, and was part of the pre-season schedule for the 1991–92 NHL season for both teams.

The Engelstad Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, was established in June 2002 to continue the philanthropic efforts of Ralph Engelstad. It was originally developed with the purpose of promoting medical research, improving the lives of people living with disabilities and creating new possibilities for high-risk individuals. The Engelstad Foundation focuses its efforts on education, healthcare, disabled individuals and childhood issues, among other areas. The foundation controls about $800 million in assets and has given over $500 million in grants, scholarships and donations to a number of nonprofits and partners throughout the United States since its establishment.

NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe was a series of two outdoor regular season National Hockey League (NHL) games, held on the weekend of February 20–21, 2021. Both games were played without fans at a rink on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada, on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. The elevation of the rink was approximately 6,240 feet (1,900 m) above sea level.
