The Eurovision Young Dancers 1997 was the seventh edition of the Eurovision Young Dancers, held at the Teatr Muzyczny in Gdynia, Poland on 17 June 1997. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP), dancers from seven countries participated in the televised final. A total of thirteen countries took part in the competition. Latvia and Slovakia made their début while five countries decided not to participate. However, France, Switzerland, Norway and, for the first time Ireland, broadcast the event.
Eurovision is a pan-European television telecommunications network owned and operated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). It was founded in 1954 in Geneva, Switzerland, and its first official transmission took place on 6 June 1954. However, a year before the official launch, on 2 June 1953 the coronation of Elizabeth II was one of the first events to be broadcast across Europe.
Valters and Kaža, known internationally as Walters and Kazha, were a Latvian music duo consisting of Valters Frīdenbergs and Kārlis Būmeisters. They were best known for representing Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song "The War Is Not Over", written by Mārtiņš Freimanis, finishing in fifth place with 153 points.
Latvia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 24 times since making its debut at the contest in 2000, where the song "My Star" performed by the group Brainstorm finished third. Latvia won the contest in 2002, with the song "I Wanna" by Marie N, defeating Malta by 12 points. Latvia is the second former Soviet country to win the contest. The 2003 contest was held in the Latvian capital Riga. The country achieved its third top 10 result in 2005, when "The War Is Not Over" by Walters and Kazha finished fifth. The Latvian participant broadcaster in the contest is Latvijas Televīzija (LTV), which select its entrant since 2015 with the national selection Supernova.
The participation of Latvia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest first began at the inaugural Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2003 which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. Latvijas Televīzija (LTV), a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), were responsible for the selection process of their participation. Latvia used a national selection format, broadcasting shows entitled "Bērnu Eirovīzija" and later "Balss Pavēlnieks", for their participation at the contests. The first representative to participate for the nation at the 2003 contest was Dzintars Čīča with the song "Tu esi vasarā", which finished in ninth place out of sixteen participating entries, achieving a score of thirty-seven points. Latvia were originally absent from the competition from 2006 to 2009. Latvia briefly returned in 2010 and 2011 however again withdrew from competing after the contest held in Yerevan, and have yet to make their return to the contest.
Portugal has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 55 times since its debut at the 1964 contest. Since then it has missed five contests. The current Portuguese participant broadcaster in the contest is Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), which select its entrant with the national selection Festival da Canção. Portugal won the contest for the first time in 2017 and hosted the 2018 contest in Lisbon.
Pirates of the Sea is a musical project that in May 2008 represented Latvia in Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade, Serbia with their song "Wolves of the Sea". It consists of three members: Italian singer Roberto Meloni who is living in Latvia, dancer Aleksandra Kurusova as well as the TV and radio person Jānis Vaišļa. Meloni also represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 as a part of Bonaparti.lv.
Elza Leimane is a Latvian ballet dancer. She graduated from the Riga Choreography School in 2001 and has been a member of the Latvian National Ballet Company since her graduation. She has been a principal dancer with the company since 2004. Elza has had additional ballet training from the Paris Conservatoire (1999), Anaheim Ballet summer courses, USA (1999), International Batrolin Ballet seminar, Vienna Conservatory summer courses (2000), the St Petersburg Ballet Company, Maryinsky Theatre and Hamburg Ballet. She was a member of the European Youth Ballet in 2000, 2001 and 2004.
"I Wanna" is a song composed and recorded by Latvian singer Marie N with lyrics written by herself and Marats Samauskis. It represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 held in Tallinn, resulting in the country's only ever win at the contest.
Latvia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2010 which took place on 20 November 2010, in Minsk, Belarus. The Latvian broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) selected the Latvian entry for the 2010 contest internally.
Aarzemnieki are a Latvian band that represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark, with their song "Cake to Bake". The lead singer of the band, Jöran Steinhauer, is German.
The Eurovision Young Dancers 2015 was the fourteenth edition of the Eurovision Young Dancers competition. The final was held in the New Theatre in Plzeň, Czech Republic on 19 June 2015. This was the first time that the Czech national broadcaster, Česká televize (ČT), had organised a Eurovision event. The event is aimed at young dancers aged between 16 and 21, competing in modern dances, be it solo or in couples, as long as they were not professionally engaged. Ten countries participated in the 2015 contest; with Albania and Malta making their début; Slovakia returning after an eighteen-year break; and Armenia, Belarus, and Ukraine deciding not to participate.
Latvia has participated in the biennial classical music competition Eurovision Young Musicians five times since its debut in 1994, most recently taking part in 2002. The country's best result is a second-place finish in 1994.
Malta has participated in the Eurovision Young Dancers 2 times since its debut in 2015. On 7 July 2015, PBS Malta, which is responsible for Malta's participation confirmed that Malta will host the 2017 edition. However, in January 2017, the EBU announced that PBS had due to circumstances beyond their control been forced to cancel their staging of the competition. Nevertheless, they will still take part in the contest.
The Czech Republic has participated in the Eurovision Young Dancers 7 times since its debut in 1999. The Czech Republic has hosted the contest twice, in 2015 and in 2017.
The United Kingdom has participated in the Eurovision Young Dancers 7 times since its debut in 1985, most recently taking part in 2005. The UK has hosted the contest once, in 2001 and jointly won the contest in 1989.
The Eurovision Young Dancers 2017 was the fifteenth and final edition of the Eurovision Young Dancers competition. The final took place at the Prague Congress Centre in the Czech capital, Prague on 16 December 2017. This was the second consecutive time that the Czech national broadcaster, Česká televize (ČT), organised the contest. The event is aimed at young dancers aged between 16 and 21, competing in modern dances, be it solo or in couples, as long as they were not professionally engaged.
"Heartbeat" is a song performed by Latvian singer Justs. The song represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, and was written by previous Latvian Eurovision entrant Aminata Savadogo. The song was released as a digital download on 3 February 2016 through Aminata Music.
Triana Park is a Latvian group founded in 2008 consisting of lead vocalist and founder Agnese Rakovska, guitarist Artūrs Strautiņš, drummer Edgars Viļums and bassist Kristaps Ērglis. Their style combines pop and electronic with hints of hip-hop and rock.
"That Night" is a song performed by Latvian band Carousel. It represented Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 on 16 May 2019. It was performed at the second semi-final, but did not qualify for the final.
