The Smithsonian Institution,or simply the Smithsonian,is a group of museums,education and research centers,the largest such complex in the world,created by the U.S. government "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge". Founded on August 10,1846,it operates as a trust instrumentality and is not formally a part of any of the three branches of the federal government. The institution is named after its founding donor,British scientist James Smithson. Johnnetta Betsch Cole is an American anthropologist,educator,museum director,and college president. Cole was the first female African-American president of Spelman College,a historically black college,serving from 1987 to 1997. She was president of Bennett College from 2002 to 2007. During 2009–2017 she was Director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art.
