LeRoy E. Cowles (April 13,1880 - January 2,1957) was an American academic administrator. He served as the president of the University of Utah from 1941 to 1946. [1]
The Star Tribune is the largest newspaper in Minnesota. It originated as the Minneapolis Tribune in 1867 and the competing Minneapolis Daily Star in 1920. During the 1930s and 1940s,Minneapolis's competing newspapers were consolidated,with the Tribune published in the morning and the Star in the evening. The Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics is an economic research institute at Yale University. It was created as the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics at Colorado Springs in 1932 by businessman and economist Alfred Cowles. In 1939,the Cowles Commission moved to the University of Chicago under Theodore O. Yntema. Jacob Marschak directed it from 1943 until 1948,when Tjalling C. Koopmans assumed leadership. Increasing opposition to the Cowles Commission from the department of economics of the University of Chicago during the 1950s impelled Koopmans to persuade the Cowles family to move the commission to Yale University in 1955 where it became the Cowles Foundation.

May Louise Cowles was an American economist,researcher,author,and advocate of Home Economics. She was a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1915 to 1958. She had many submissions published in the Journal of Home Economics,the Journal of the American Dietetic Association,and Rural Sociology. She also produced several widely read pamphlets,including Meeting Housing Needs of Older People in Rural Areas (1957),and spoke at a string of national seminars to encourage the addition of family economics to home economics instruction across the United States.
Charles Holden Cowles was a North Carolina Republican politician who served one term in the United States House of Representatives. He was the son of Calvin J. Cowles,a prominent Republican who was the son-in-law of William W. Holden. His uncle was Democratic Congressman William H. H. Cowles.
Osborne Bryan "Ozzie" Cowles was an American basketball player and coach. He was the head men's basketball coach at Carleton College (1924–1930),River Falls State Teachers College (1932–1936),Dartmouth College (1936–1946),University of Michigan (1946–1948),and University of Minnesota (1948–1959). He was also the head baseball coach and assistant basketball and football coach at Iowa State Teachers College,now the University of Northern Iowa during 1923–24. In 30 seasons as a collegiate head basketball coach,Cowles compiled a record of 416–189 (.688). His teams competed in the NCAA basketball tournament six times. At the time of his retirement in 1959,Cowles ranked among the top 15 college basketball coaches of all time by number of games won. He has been inducted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame,the Dartmouth "Wearers of the Green," the University of Minnesota "M" Club Hall of Fame,the Carleton College Hall of Fame,and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Athletics Hall of Fame.

Charles Frederick Roos was an American economist who made contributions to mathematical economics. He was one of the founders of the Econometric Society together with American economist Irving Fisher and Norwegian economist Ragnar Frisch in 1930. He served as Secretary-Treasurer during the first year of the Society and was elected as President in 1948. He was director of research of the Cowles Commission from September 1934 to January 1937.
