In 2009 the French newspaper Le Monde initiated a Person of the Year designation for the man or woman of that year who had affected the world most significantly, either positively or negatively. [1]

Bashar al-Assad President of Syria

Bashar Hafez al-Assad is a Syrian politician who has been the President of Syria since 17 July 2000. In addition, he is commander-in-chief of the Syrian Armed Forces and Regional Secretary of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party's branch in Syria. Rifaat Ali al-Assad is the younger brother of the former President of Syria, Hafez Assad and Jamil Assad, and the uncle of the incumbent President Bashar al-Assad. He is alleged by some sources to be the commanding officer responsible for the Hama massacre of 1982. Recently declassified material back his claims that his brother Hafez al-Assad was responsible, as do a number of commentators. Despite accusations, Rifaat has always denied culpability. He was long known as a loyalist of Hafez Assad, and held the strongest Sunni position within the Syrian government until he resigned his positions and left the country in 2005 in protest against certain policies of Hafez's son and successor, Bashar Assad.

Maher al-Assad Syrian general

Maher al-Assad is a Syrian general and commander of the Republican Guard and the army's elite Fourth Armoured Division, which together with Syria's secret police form the core of the country's security forces. He is also a member of the Central Committee of the Ba'ath Party's Syrian Regional Branch. He is thought by some to be the second most powerful man in Syria after his brother Bashar, the current President. Maher is described by analysts as preferring Iran to play the largest role as the Syrian Government's main ally during the Syrian Civil War and subsequent post-war reconstruction. This is in contrast to the position of Suheil al-Hassan, head of the Division 25 Special Mission Forces, who was reported as preferring Russia.

Rami Makhlouf is a Syrian businessman and the maternal cousin of president Bashar al-Assad. He is considered Syria's wealthiest man and one of the most powerful men in Syria; according to Syrian analysts he is part of al-Assad's inner circle and no foreign company can do business in Syria without his consent and partnership. Riad Mousa al-Asaad was the commander of the Free Syrian Army. He was a former Colonel in the Syrian Air Force who defected in July 2011.

2014 Syrian presidential election

Presidential elections were held in Syria on 3 June 2014. It was the first multi-candidate election in decades since the Ba'ath party came to power in the 1963 coup. In late April 2014, Bashar al-Assad announced he would run for a third term in Syria's first multi-candidate direct presidential election.

Ali Sulayman al-Assad Syrian activist

Ali Sulayman al-Assad, born Ali Sulayman al-Wahhish Arabic: علي سليمان الوحش‎), was a leader of the Alawites in Latakia. He was the father of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, and grandfather of current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
