The history of South Korea begins with the Japanese surrender on 2 September 1945. At that time,South Korea and North Korea were divided,despite being the same people and on the same peninsula. In 1950,the Korean War broke out. North Korea overran South Korea until US-led UN forces intervened. At the end of the war in 1953,the border between South and North remained largely similar. Tensions between the two sides continued. South Korea alternated between dictatorship and liberal democracy.It underwent substantial economic development.

The Rangoon bombing of 9 October 1983,was an assassination attempt against Chun Doo-hwan,the fifth president of South Korea,in Rangoon,Burma. The attempt was orchestrated by North Korea. Although Chun survived,21 people died in the attack and 46 were injured. One suspect was later killed,and the two other suspected bombers were captured,one of whom confessed to being a North Korean military officer.

The Case of Itaewon Homicide is a 2009 South Korean crime thriller film,based on the true story of the Itaewon murder case,which shocked Korea when Hongik college student Cho Jung-Pil was found dead at an Itaewon Burger King in 1997. The murder was investigated in 1997 by CID Agents J. Choi,D. Zeliff,T. Barnes and B. Crow. Two troubled U.S. teenagers—Arthur Patterson and Edward Lee—became suspects and were convicted. Patterson was released a year later in a special amnesty and Lee was freed a year after that due to lack of evidence. The case never resulted in further convictions. It stars Jang Keun-suk as Arthur Patterson and Jung Jin-young as his lawyer. Song Joong-ki played the victim. The film had 531,068 admissions in South Korea nationwide.
Early presidential elections were held in South Korea on 9 May 2017 following the impeachment and removal of Park Geun-hye. The elections were conducted in a single round,on a first-past-the-post basis,and had originally been scheduled for 20 December 2017. However,they were brought forward after the decision of the Constitutional Court on 10 March 2017 to uphold the National Assembly's impeachment of Park. Following procedures set out in the Constitution of South Korea,Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn succeeded Park as the acting president. After Park was removed from office by the Constitutional Court's ruling,acting president Hwang announced he would not run for a term in his own right.

The impeachment of Park Geun-hye,President of South Korea,was the culmination of a political scandal involving interventions to the presidency from her aide,Choi Soon-sil. The impeachment vote took place on 9 December 2016,with 234 members of the 300-member National Assembly voting in favour of the impeachment and temporary suspension of Park Geun-hye's presidential powers and duties. This exceeded the required two-thirds threshold in the National Assembly and,although the vote was by secret ballot,the results indicated that more than half of the 128 lawmakers in Park's party Saenuri had supported her impeachment. Thus,Hwang Kyo-ahn,then Prime Minister of South Korea,became Acting President while the Constitutional Court of Korea was due to determine whether to accept the impeachment. The court upheld the impeachment in a unanimous 8–0 decision on 10 March 2017,removing Park from office. The regularly scheduled presidential election was advanced to 9 May 2017,and Moon Jae-in,former leader of the Democratic Party,was elected as Park's permanent successor.

Crowd collapses and crowd crushes are catastrophic incidents that can occur when a body of people becomes dangerously overcrowded. When numbers are up to about five people per square meter,the environment may feel cramped but manageable;when numbers reach between eight and ten people per square meter,individuals become pressed against each other and may be swept along against their will by the motion of the crowd. Under these conditions,the crowd may undergo a progressive collapse where the pressure pushes people off their feet,resulting in people being trampled or crushed by the weight of other people falling on top of them. At even higher densities,the pressure on each individual can cause them to be crushed or asphyxiated while still upright.

On 29 October 2022,around 22:20,a crowd surge occurred during Halloween festivities in the Itaewon neighborhood of Seoul,South Korea. According to the South Korean government,159 people were killed and 196 others were injured. The death toll includes two people who died after the crush.
