The governor of South Dakota is the head of government of South Dakota. The governor is elected to a four-year term in even years when there is no presidential election. The current governor is Kristi Noem,a member of the Republican Party who took office on January 5,2019.
Stephanie Marie Herseth Sandlin is an American attorney,university administrator,and politician from the Democratic Party. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor of South Dakota in 2018,losing to Republican primary to Kristi Noem.
Kathy Szeliga is an American politician who has served as a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates since January 12,2011,and as Minority Whip from 2013 to 2021. Szeliga was the Republican nominee for the United States Senate in 2016 to replace Barbara Mikulski,who retired.
South Dakota House Bill 1008,also known as House Bill 1008,HB 1008,and the Bathroom Bill,was a bill passed by the South Dakota Legislature in 2016 and vetoed by Governor of South Dakota Dennis Daugaard. The purpose of the bill was to restrict bathroom and locker room use by transgender students to facilities that matched their sex assigned at birth,not their gender identity. It was the first such bathroom bill to be passed in a state legislature in the U.S. and sparked a chain of similar bills across the nation. HB 1008 was opposed by several LGBT rights organizations,such as the HRC,GLSEN,and ACLU.
The 2018 South Dakota gubernatorial election took place on November 6,2018,to elect the next governor of South Dakota. Incumbent Republican governor Dennis Daugaard was term-limited and could not seek a third consecutive term.
The 2022 United States Senate election in South Dakota was held on November 8,2022,to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of South Dakota. Incumbent three-term Republican U.S. Senator John Thune,who is the Senate Minority Whip,was first elected in 2004,defeating Democratic incumbent Tom Daschle,the then-Senate Minority Leader. He ran for reelection to a fourth term. The Democratic nominee was 26-year Navy,Air Force JAG Corps Veteran,and former college professor Brian Bengs. Thune was ultimately reelected.
Julie Frye-Mueller is an American politician from South Dakota. A member of the Republican Party,she has been a member of the South Dakota Senate,serving since 2021. She was censured by the Senate in 2023 for harassment of a legislative staffer;she denied harassment.
Jason Richard Ravnsborg is an American attorney and politician. A Republican,he served as Attorney General of South Dakota from 2019 until his removal in 2022. Ravnsborg ran for the U.S. Senate in 2014,losing in the Republican primary to former Governor Mike Rounds,who won the general election.

Linda Duba is an American politician and educator based in Sioux Falls,South Dakota. She serves in the South Dakota lower house as one of the Democratic representatives of the 15th District along with Jamie Smith. Her district covers the northern part of Sioux Falls including the Downtown,Whittier,Cathedral,Terrace park,West 10th Street,and Garfield neighborhoods. The 15th District lies completely within Minnehaha county. Duba succeeded Representative Karen Soli in 2019.
Red Dawn Foster is an American politician serving as a member of the South Dakota Senate from the 27th district,which encompasses the Pine Ridge Reservation as well as Bennett,Haakon,Jackson,Pennington and Oglala Lakota counties. Elected in November 2018,she assumed office on January 8,2019 and is the current incumbent.
The 2022 South Dakota gubernatorial election took place on November 8,2022,electing the governor of South Dakota. Incumbent Republican governor Kristi Noem defeated Democratic nominee Jamie Smith to win a second term.
The 2022 South Dakota Attorney General election took place on November 8,2022,to elect the next attorney general of South Dakota. On June 21,2022,former Republican Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg was convicted and removed from office for malfeasance of office. The State Senate further barred Ravnsborg from holding office in South Dakota. Republican Mark Vargo was appointed to fill the remainder of Ravnsborg's term and did not run for a full term.
