The Leeds Conductors Competition, is a music competition for young British conductors in the city of Leeds. [1]

History

The competition was founded by Michael Johnson of the Leeds City Council and David Lloyd-Jones, Founder Director of Opera North with the support of Sir Charles Groves. The competition has strong ties with the Orchestra of Opera North. The first competition was in 1984 and has taken place eight more times since then . [2] The winner of the first prize of the competition has the opportunity to conduct most of the UK's major orchestras, including the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Simon Halsey

Simon Halsey, CBE is an English choral conductor. He is the Chorus Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, a position he has held since 1983, and has been Chorus Director of the London Symphony Chorus since 2012. He is also artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Youth Choral Programme and the director of the BBC Proms Youth Choir, and Conductor Laureate of the Berlin Radio Choir. He is Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Birmingham.

Martyn Charles Brabbins is a British conductor. The fourth of five children in his family, he learned to play the euphonium, and then the trombone during his youth at Towcester Studio Brass Band. He later studied composition at Goldsmiths, University of London. He subsequently studied conducting with Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatory.

Leeds International Piano Competition International award for exceptional piano performance

The Leeds International Piano Competition, informally known as The Leeds and formerly the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, takes place every three years in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was founded in 1961 by Marion, Countess of Harewood, Dame Fanny Waterman, and Roslyn Lyons, with the first competition being held in 1963. Waterman was the chair and artistic director up to the 2015 competition when Paul Lewis and Adam Gatehouse became Co-Artistic Directors. The first round of the competition takes place in Berlin, Singapore and New York and the 2nd round, semi-final and finals take place in the Great Hall of the University of Leeds and in Leeds Town Hall.

Adam Gatehouse is an English conductor, radio producer and editor, and classical music administrator. He was the main conductor of the Ballet Rambert and the Dutch National Ballet before working for BBC Radio 3 (1991–2013), where he became editor of live music, and founded the New Generation Artists scheme and the Wigmore Hall lunchtime concert series. He has been artistic director of the Leeds International Piano Competition since 2015.
