The Legend in Mining award is presented annually to individuals who have made notable contributions to the resources sector. The award recipients are determined by the editors of Resource Stocks magazine, a London-based industry publication.

Rio Tinto is an Anglo-Australian multinational and one of the world's largest metals and mining corporations. The company was founded in 1873, when a multinational consortium of investors purchased a mine complex on the Rio Tinto, in Huelva, Spain, from the Spanish government. Since then, the company has grown through a long series of mergers and acquisitions to place itself among the world leaders in the production of many commodities, including aluminium, iron ore, copper, uranium, and diamonds. Although primarily focused on extraction of minerals, Rio Tinto also has significant operations in refining, particularly for refining bauxite and iron ore. The company has operations on six continents, but is mainly concentrated in Australia and Canada, and owns its mining operations through a complex web of wholly and partly owned subsidiaries. Rio Tinto has joint head offices in London and Melbourne.
WMC Resources Limited was an Australian diversified mining and fertiliser company that was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. WMC was an acronym for Western Mining Corporation. It was delisted on 29 June 2005 following a successful takeover by BHP Billiton. It was founded in 1933 as a gold miner. When it was taken over it had three main businesses:
Anglo American plc is a British multinational mining company based in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, United Kingdom. It is the world's largest producer of platinum, with around 40% of world output, as well as being a major producer of diamonds, copper, nickel, iron ore and metallurgical and thermal coal. The company has operations in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.
Rum Jungle is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about 105 kilometres south of Darwin on the East Branch of the Finniss River. It is the site of a uranium deposit, found in 1949, which has been mined.
Paul Holloway is an Australian politician who represented the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party in the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Mitchell from 1989 to 1993, and in the South Australian Legislative Council from 1995 to 2011.
Nornickel is a Russian nickel and palladium mining and smelting company. Its largest operations are located in the Norilsk–Talnakh area near the Yenisei River, in northern Russia. It also has holdings near the Kola Peninsula at Nikel, Zapolyarny, and Monchegorsk; in western Finland at Harjavalta; in southern Africa in Botswana and South Africa; and in western Australia. MMC stands for "Mining and Metallurgical Company".

Minara Resources Pty Ltd is one of the major mining companies of Australia, specializing in the mining of cobalt and nickel. It is one of the top ten nickel mines in Australia. It is wholly owned by the Swiss commodities trading firm, Glencore plc as of November 2011. Based in Perth, Minara Resources was founded in 1994 as the successor to Anaconda Nickel Ltd. which was founded by Fortescue Metals Group chief Andrew Forrest. In 2006, it had a capitalization of approximately $1.3 bn. At the time of takeover, it was valued at a total of $1.02 billion (Australian). Minara applied on October 14, 2011 to have its stock (MRE) suspended from trading on the Australian Stock Exchange.
Fortescue Metals Group Ltd is an Australian iron ore company. Fortescue is the fourth largest iron ore producer in the world after BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, and Vale. The company has holdings of more than 87,000 km2 in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, making it the largest tenement holder in the state, larger than both BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.
John Andrew Henry Forrest, nicknamed Twiggy, is an Australian businessman. He is best known as the former CEO of Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), but also has interests elsewhere in the mining industry and in cattle stations.

It is active in the telecommunications, engineering and infrastructure, building and property, mining and resources, and environmental services industries. It has operations in Australia, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, and the Middle East. Leighton Holdings was rebranded as the CIMIC Group in 2015.
Diggers & Dealers is an annual mining conference held in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia which was first held in 1992. The 2012 event represented the 20th running of the event. It is "Australia's premier international mining conference".
Iron ore mining in Western Australia, in the 2016-17 financial year, accounted for 54 percent of the total value of the state's resource production, with a value of A$61.7 billion. The overall value of the minerals and petroleum industry in Western Australia was A$114.9 billion in 2017-18, a 9.5 percent increase on the previous financial year.
Nickel mining in Western Australia has been an industry that has had many fluctuations of fortune in its history. Large fluctuations in the world nickel price have seen mines close and reopen on several occasions.
Dr Ian Geoffrey Gould is a former Chancellor of the University of South Australia (2008–2015) and former Managing Director (Australia) of Rio Tinto Group. Gould is considered to be one of South Australia's most influential people.
Owen Hegarty is an Australian mining professional with over forty years experience in the industry. Hegarty worked with the Rio Tinto Group for 24 years, where he held positions of Managing Director Asia and Managing Director of the group's copper and gold business. He founded the Oxiana Ltd Group which grew from a small exploration company into a multi-billion dollar base and precious metals producer, developer and explorer. Oxiana merged with Zinifex to form OZ Minerals in 2008. Hegarty's commentary on the resources sector has been published in various news media including The Age, The Australian, The Australian Financial Review, Jakarta Post, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal and other industry-specific publications.
Elizabeth Gaines is an Australian businesswoman who serves as chief executive officer (CEO) of iron ore company Fortescue Metals Group. She is the company’s first female CEO.
