The Leicester Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1878 as the Leicester Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was held at the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. It ran until 1939 as an open international tennis event. [1]

History

In 1878 the first Leicester Lawn Tennis Tournament was staged at Aylestone Park, Leicester and played on three courts. In 1881 that event became an open tournament that included women and was then known as the Leicester Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. [2] By 1891 the tournament was being staged under the name of the Leicester Open Tennis Tournament [3] In 1900 a new county level tournament called the Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships, that was played at Ashby-de-la-Zouch until 1904.

In 1905 the Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships returned to Leicester where the continued to be played until 1908. In 1909 for one year only it was held again at Ashby-de-la-Zouch. In 1910 through until 1913 it held in Leicester. Between 1915 and 1918 the open international championships were not held because of World War I and were not resumed. In 1926 Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club established a closed tournament called the Leicestershire Closed County Championships that is still operating today. [4] From 1939 until 1945 that tournament was not held as a result of World War II. [5]

However the Leicester LTC continued to also host it's Leicester Open Tournament, during the period the county championship event were staged at Ashby-de-la-Zouch. In 1906 the club was also host to a one off event called the Men's Championship of Europe. [6] The Leicester Open continued to be staged through until the start of World War II. [7]

In the Summer of 1878 as The Leicester Lawn Tennis and Quoit Club one of the 12 oldest tennis clubs in the world was founded. [8] Generally known as Leicester Lawn Tennis Club until 1912. [9] In l929 the club was incorporated as The Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club. [10] The first known grounds were on land rented from Leicester Corporation for £30 per year, 6068 square yards on the south side of Park Road (now Victoria Park Road) near the London Road in 1885. [11] It then consisted of six grass courts, and a cinder court. [12] In 1900 this ground had to be vacated due to road development and the current ground was leased from JW Goddard, the main entrance then was from Toller Road in Leicester. [13]

Founded in 1879, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895. The Bath Grounds is a historic recreational ground and cricket ground based in the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. It is home to Ashby Hastings Cricket Club and Ashby Bowls Club. The grounds are subject to conservation area protection. and are designated a "sensitive area" in retained policy E1 of the most recent Local Plan.

The 1880 Men's tennis tour was the fifth amateur tennis tour held that year. It now incorporated 41 tournaments staged in Australia, Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. The 1880 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley against Herbert Lawford, in the Challenge Round.

The 1881 Men's tennis tour was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 65 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The Wimbledon Championships and Irish Championships was won by William Renshaw, the U.S. National Championships was won by Richard Sears collecting his second title other big winners were Richard Taswell Richardson picking up the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships and Ernest Renshaw winning the Princes Club Championships, The title leader this season was Robert W. Braddell winning 4 tournaments from 6 finals.

The Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw for the third consecutive year, while Richard Sears continued his dominance at the U.S. National Championships also winning a third successive title. Other big winners this season were Ernest Renshaw, picking up the Irish Championships, Herbert Wilberforce winning the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships in Manchester, and Herbert Lawford collecting his second and final title at the Princes Club Championships. The Hampshire Tennis Championships or the Hampshire Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis event established in 1878 as the Bournemouth CLTC Tournament. In 1906 the Bournemouth tournament was upgraded to a county level event and renamed as Hampshire County Lawn Tennis Championships that ran continuously until 1981.

The County Wicklow Championships is a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first staged in 1878. first held at Bromley, County Wicklow, Ireland. The tournament was held to at least 1967 as part of the international tennis tour. The championships are still being held today

The Armagh Championship Tournament or Armagh ALTC Championship was a combined men's and women's Hard court tennis tournament staged first staged on 28 September 1878 as the Armagh Lawn Tennis Tournament at the Archery and Lawn Tennis Club, Armagh, Northern Ireland. The Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships or simply called the Leicestershire Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1900 that ran until 1914 as an open international tennis event. In 1926 the event was reclassified as a closed tournament open only to Leicestershire residents and club players only.

The Staffordshire Tennis Championships or Staffordshire County Lawn Lennis Championships or simply Staffordshire Championships was combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in July 1878 as the Staffordshire County Cricket Club Lawn Tennis Tournament. That event was initially held at Litchfield, Staffordshire. From the mid-1880s to 1890s the tournament was known as the Staffordshire Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1893 the Staffordshire Lawn tennis Association was formed. By the early 1920s it had become a county level event that ran until 1984.

The Bedford Open also known as the Bedford Lawn Tennis Open Tournament was men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Bedfordshire LTC Tournament. It was held at the Bedford Lawn Tennis Club, Bedford, Berkshire, England and ran through until 1974 when it was abolished.

The Shanklin Open was men's and women's grass and hard court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Shanklin LTC Tournament. It held Shanklin, Isle of Wight, England and ran through until 1939 when it was abolished.

The Hull Open was annual men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as the Hull Westbourne Avenue Open Tournament in 1884. From 1905 to 1914 the tournament was co-branded as the East Yorkshire Championships. The tournament was organised by the Hull Lawn Tennis Club, Kingston-Upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The tournament ran until 1956.
