The Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships or simply called the Leicestershire Championships [1] was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1900 that ran until 1914 as an open international tennis event. In 1926 the event was reclassified as a closed tournament open only to Leicestershire residents and club players only.

History

In 1878 the first Leicester Lawn Tennis Tournament was staged at Aylestone Park, Leicester and played on three courts. In 1881 that event became an open tournament that included women and was then known as the Leicester Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. [2] By 1891 the tournament was being staged under the name of the Leicester Open Tennis Tournament [3] In 1900 Leicestershire LTC launched a new county level tournament called the Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships, that was played at Ashby-de-la-Zouch until 1904. However the Leicester LTC also continued to host an Leicester Open Tournament (1900–04, 1909) during the period the county championship event was staged at Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

In 1905 the Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships returned to Leicester where the continued to be played until 1908. In 1909 for one year only it was held again at Ashby-de-la-Zouch. In 1910 through until 1913 it held in Leicester. Between 1915 and 1918 the open international championships were not held because of World War I, and were not resumed. In 1926 Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club established a closed tournament called the Leicestershire Closed County Championships that is still operating today. [4] From 1939 until 1945 that tournament was not held as a result of World War II. [5]

Ashby-de-la-Zouch

The Leicestershire Championships were for certain periods staged at the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle Lawn Tennis Club. [6] This particular club also staged an early and successful tennis event called the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Open Tournament (f.1900), [7] In 1910 the open tournament was renamed as the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Championship. By 1939 the event was known as the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Open Lawn Tennis Championships. [8]

Leicester

In the Summer of 1878 as The Leicester Lawn Tennis and Quoit Club one of the 12 oldest tennis clubs in the world was founded. [9] Generally known as Leicester Lawn Tennis Club until 1912. [10] In 1929 the club was incorporated as The Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club. [11] The first known grounds were on land rented from Leicester Corporation for £30 per year, 6068 square yards on the south side of Park Road (now Victoria Park Road) near the London Road in 1885. [12] It then consisted of six grass courts, and a cinder court. [13] In 1900 this ground had to be vacated due to road development and the current ground was leased from JW Goddard, the main entrance then was from Toller Road in Leicester. [14]

After being discontinued in 2008, it was downgraded in 2011 to ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Women's Circuit. briefly re-established as an ATP World Tour 250 event on the men's tour in 2015 and 2016, before returning to a Challenger event in 2017, and since 2015 it has been an international event on the women's tour. The tournament is held in June as a "warm-up" for Wimbledon.

The 1881 Men's tennis tour was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 65 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The Wimbledon Championships and Irish Championships was won by William Renshaw, the U.S. National Championships was won by Richard Sears collecting his second title other big winners were Richard Taswell Richardson picking up the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships and Ernest Renshaw winning the Princes Club Championships, The title leader this season was Robert W. Braddell winning 4 tournaments from 6 finals.

The 1883 Men's tennis tour was the eighth annual tennis tour, consisting of 63 tournaments. The Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw for the third consecutive year, while Richard Sears continued his dominance at the U.S. National Championships also winning a third successive title. Other big winners this season were Ernest Renshaw, picking up the Irish Championships, Herbert Wilberforce winning the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships in Manchester, and Herbert Lawford collecting his second and final title at the Princes Club Championships. The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1889 the event had by this time become a regional level tournament that ran until 1983 when it lost its status as a senior international tour level event. However the championships are still being staged today as the East of England and an LTA British Tour.

The Ilkley Open was a grass court tennis event founded in May 1885 as the Ilkley Tournament. It was held at the Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club (f.1880), Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England through until 1981, when the it failed to find any new sponsors the tournament ended.

The Hampshire Tennis Championships or the Hampshire Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis event established in 1878 as the Bournemouth CLTC Tournament. In 1906 the Bournemouth tournament was upgraded to a county level event and renamed as Hampshire County Lawn Tennis Championships that ran continuously until 1981.

The Truro LTC Open Tournament was a late Victorian era grass court tennis tournament first staged on 24 September 1880. The tournament was organised by the Truro Lawn Tennis Club, and held on the cricket grounds, Truro, Cornwall, England. The tournament was held to at least 1888.

The Leicester Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1878 as the Leicester Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was held at the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. It ran until 1939 as an open international tennis event.

The Bedford Open also known as the Bedford Lawn Tennis Open Tournament was men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Bedfordshire LTC Tournament. It was held at the Bedford Lawn Tennis Club, Bedford, Berkshire, England and ran through until 1974 when it was abolished.

The Shanklin Open was men's and women's grass and hard court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Shanklin LTC Tournament. It held Shanklin, Isle of Wight, England and ran through until 1939 when it was abolished.
