The Leipzig Marathon is an annual marathon race over the classic distance of 42 km and 195 metres held in the city of Leipzig, Germany since 1977. The event began as an East German competition and it hosted the German Democratic Republic's national championship on four occasions (1985, 1986, 1987, and 1990).

Frank Charles Shorter is an American former long-distance runner who won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. His Olympic success, along with the achievements of other American runners, is credited with igniting the running boom in the United States during the 1970s.

Uta Pippig is a retired German long-distance runner, and the first woman to officially win the Boston Marathon three consecutive times (1994–1996). She also won the Berlin Marathon three times ; the 1993 New York City Marathon; represented Germany at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996, and won a bronze medal at the 1991 World 15km Road Race Championship. Her marathon best of 2:21:45 set in Boston in 1994, made her the third-fastest female marathon runner in history at that time.

SC Sportbrüder Leipzig was a German association football club from the city of Leipzig, Saxony and was notable as a predecessor side of VfB Leipzig, one of the founding member of the DFB at Leipzig in 1900. It was the first marathon she had completed in her career. In total, 32,991 runners managed to finish the 2011 edition of the marathon, comprising 25,577 men and 7414 women.
