The Leipziger Consort was a well-known chamber music ensemble from the DDR
The Ensemble was founded in 1982. [1] Members were on the one hand Axel Schmidt (oboe), Matthias Sannemüller (viola) and Dieter Zahn (double-bass). They were solo musicians in the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra (today: MDR-Sinfonieorchester) and members of the Gruppe Neue Musik Hanns Eisler. In addition, Roland Zimmer (guitar) and later Thomas Blumenthal (guitar) were its members.
They dedicated themselves to Baroque music and New music. In particular they premiered works by Reiner Bredemeyer, Georg Katzer, Friedrich Schenker, Günter Neubert, Karl Ottomar Treibmann, Manfred Schubert und Thomas Müller. [2] The Leipzig Consort gave guest concerts in many European countries; numerous radio productions were documented.
The group disbanded in the early 1990s. In 1992 Sannemüller and Blumenthal founded the Ensemble Sortisatio.
Udo Zimmermann was a German composer, musicologist, opera director, and conductor. He worked as a professor of composition, founded a centre for contemporary music in Dresden, and was director of the Leipzig Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He directed a contemporary music series for the Bayerischer Rundfunk and a European centre of the arts in Hellerau. His operas, especially Weiße Rose, on a topic he set to music twice, have been performed internationally, and recorded.

Ensemble Sortisatio is a quartet founded by violist Matthias Sannemüller in 1992 in Leipzig, Germany. Its members are mostly soloists at the MDR Symphony Orchestra. They have specialized in contemporary classical music.
The Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik is a music festival for contemporary chamber music, jointly organised by the town Witten in the Ruhr Area and the broadcasting station Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). The concerts take place over a weekend at the end of April or in early May, and concentrate on world premieres of small-scale works, more than 600 as of 2010. They are broadcast worldwide via the European Broadcasting Union.
Gruppe Neue Musik Hanns Eisler was an ensemble of musicians founded in 1970 in Leipzig with a focus on contemporary classical music, which played several world premieres and toured internationally. The ensemble disbanded in 1993.

Karl Ottomar Treibmann was a German composer and music educator. From 1981 until his retirement in 2001, he was professor of music theory and Tonsatz at the Leipzig University. He was one of the representatives of modernity in the German Democratic Republic, whose great major works can be found in the areas of opera, symphony and chamber music.

Fritz Eberhardt Klemm was a German musicologist and journalist. He was one of the leading Hanns Eisler experts of the GDR.
The Hanns Eisler Prize was an East-German music award, named after the composer Hanns Eisler. It was awarded by Radio DDR – with advisory participation of the music section of the Akademie der Künste der DDR in Berlin (East) and the Verband der Komponisten und Musikwissenschaftler der DDR (VDK) – and on the occasion of his 70th birthday on 6 July 1968, the first time in the ballroom of the Alten Rathaus. The Hanns Eisler Prize was endowed with 10,000 marks and was one of the most renowned music prizes in the German Democratic Republic.
MaerzMusik is a festival of the Berliner Festspiele and has been held annually since 2002 in March at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and other venues. It is the successor festival to the Musik-Biennale Berlin and is considered one of the most important festivals for Neue Musik in Germany. The artistic director of MaerzMusik is Kamila Metwaly.
