The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Correctional Unit is a 23 bed, medium security facility located on the eighth floor of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. This facility serves as the primary acute medical care facility for inmates in the state prison system. This unit is under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Department of Correction. The LSHCU was established in 1974 as a federally funded pilot program to serve as the DOC's acute care medical facility. The unit originally consisted of a seven bed ward on the eighth floor of the hospital. By 1979, the commonwealth took financial control of the facility from the federal government due to the success of the facility. Also by this time, the DOC entered into an agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to provide medical care to state inmates. In 1982, an out-patient clinic was constructed and in 1987, the last phase of the expansion of the eighth floor was completed. As of 2015, the facility has 23 beds and can also accommodate up to 100 out-patient inmates at any one time. [1]

Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center (SBCC) is a maximum security prison in Lancaster, Massachusetts. It is operated by the Massachusetts Department of Correction. It is close to the medium-security prison Massachusetts Correctional Institution – Shirley, which is directly to the north over the town border. Souza-Baranowski opened on September 30, 1998. The selection of the location for the prison was controversial and included legal challenges. The minimum and medium security facility operates several programs designed to teach skills to inmates. Coffee Creek is the only women's prison in Oregon.
Bridgewater State Hospital, located in southeastern Massachusetts, is a state facility housing the criminally insane and those whose sanity is being evaluated for the criminal justice system. It was established in 1855 as an almshouse. It was then used as a workhouse for inmates with short sentences who worked the surrounding farmland. It was later rebuilt in the 1880s and again in 1974. As of January 6, 2020 there were 217 inmates in general population beds. The facility was the subject of the 1967 documentary Titicut Follies. Bridgewater State Hospital falls under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Department of Correction but its day to day operations is managed by Wellpath, a contracted vendor.

The facility was originally built in 1913 as the Eastern Oregon State Hospital, a hospital for long-term mental patients, but was converted into a prison in 1983.
