Leonie Meyer (born c.1994) is a German sailor, medical student and prospective Olympic kitesurfer.

Life

Meyer had been interested in sailing as a child. She was raised by sporting parents in Osnabrück [1] and her initial success was with a 49er . [2] In 2014 she and Elena Stoffers won a bronze medal in Helsinki at the European 49er Championship  [ es ]. They had both been kitesurfing together in 2013. [3]

Meyer moved to Kiel in 2012 as part of her unsuccessful plan to compete at the 2016 Olympics. In Kiel she started to study at Kiel University to become a doctor and she changed her main sailing interest to kitesurfing. [1]

In 2020 she and Florian Gruber formed a Mixed Relay Formula Kite team who won silver at the Formula Kite Championships in Traunsee in Austria.[ citation needed ] She had a child in 2021 and she is suppoted by the Deutsche Sporthilfe foundation and Deutsche Bank. [1] She receives funding targeted at German athletes, like her and Paul Kohlhoff, who are parents by the German Sailing Association. [4]

In the European Formula Kite Championships in 2023 she was a semi-finalist and she was ranked ninth. [5]

Meyer was third in the 53rd Trofeo Princesa Sofia which is part of the 2024 Sailing World Cup, receiving the bronze medal in Women's Formula Kite. She was beaten by the American Daniela Moroz, who took silver, and the Australian Breiana Whitehead, who won the event. [6]

In April she was competing in Hyères in France at "Olympic Week", the last-chance event where kitesurfers were competing for the last five places for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Meyer was there, but she was one of the sailors who had already been given a place. [7]

Sophie Claire Ainsworth is a British sailor who qualified to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Charlotte Fletcher-Scott is a British sailor who competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Olympics.

He is the reigning Formula Kite World, Asiad and European champion and holds the distinction of being the youngest winner in any Olympic sailing class competition, achieving this remarkable feat at the age of 16. Maeder is also a three-time Formula Kite youth world champion in consecutive years from 2021 to 2023 and won various open championships across Europe, Asia and Pan America.

Stephanie "Steph" Bridge is a United Kingdom kitesurfer who became the World Formula Kite champion five times between 2009 and 2016. She is the leading figure in the "Team Bridge" family.

Elena Kalinina is a Russian World champion at Formula Kite where competitors use kites to propel small hydrofoils. Kalinina first became a World Champion in 2014 when she was seventeen.

Maggie Eillen Pescetto is an Italian Formula Kite sailor who took the silver position at the Kite Open Africa and Middle East Championship in 2022. She was nominated for Olympic competition at formula kite in 2024.

(María) Catalina "Cata" Turienzo is an Argentina Argentine kitesurfer who took silver at the 2023 Pan American Games and a place in the 2024 Olympic Games. She was the 2024 Formula Kite Youth World Champion.

Emily Claire Bugeja is a Canadian kitefoiler nominated to compete at the 2024 Olympics.
