Leroy Hugh Logan MBE is a former police superintendent in the UK. He was both a founding member of the Black Police Association [1] and its chairman for 30 years.
Logan left the Metropolitan Police at the rank of superintendent having been involved in the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, the inquiry into the killing of Damilola Taylor and the organisation of the London 2012 Olympics.
In 2020, Logan published his first book Closing Ranks, My Life as a Cop which described his time as a senior police officer in London. [2] Red, White and Blue , a dramatisation of Logan's decision to join and of his early time in the police service, was broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom and Amazon Prime in the United States in winter 2020. Logan was played by the actor John Boyega. [3]
Born in 1957 in Islington, London, to Jamaican parents, [4] Logan attended Highbury Grove School for secondary education and Hackney Community College where he studied biology, chemistry and physics for A-Level. [5] After leaving school, he attended the University of East London from 1976 to 1980 where he earned a BSc degree in applied biology. In 2013, the University of East London awarded Logan an honorary PhD for his services to policing.
Logan joined the police force in 1983, [5] having previously worked as a research scientist. [6] He was inspired to join the police after witnessing two officers assault his father. [7]
Logan was described by The Voice newspaper as "one of the Black officers who helped change the Met". [8] In 2000, he was awarded an MBE for his work in advancing policing. [9]
As chair of the Black Police Association, he was involved in the Stephen Lawrence inquiry and the inquiry into the killing of Damilola Taylor. [5] Logan retired as a police officer in 2013. [7] He remains an executive member of the National Black Police Association and is a founder member of the Black Police Association Charitable Trust.
In 2003, Logan was awarded £100,000 by the Metropolitan Police following an investigation over a hotel bill. [10] His autobiography, Closing Ranks: My Life as a Cop, was published in 2020. [11]
Logan is portrayed by John Boyega in the episode “Red, White and Blue” of Small Axe , an anthology TV series created by Steve McQueen. [12]

Stephen Lawrence was a black British teenager from Plumstead, southeast London, who was murdered in a racially motivated attack while waiting for a bus in Well Hall Road, Eltham on the evening of 22 April 1993, when he was 18 years old. The case became a cause célèbre: its fallout included changes of attitudes on racism and the police, and to the law and police practice. It also led to the partial revocation of the rule against double jeopardy. Two of the perpetrators were convicted of murder on 3 January 2012.
On 27 November 2000, ten-year-old Nigerian schoolboy Damilola Taylor was killed in London, in what became one of the United Kingdom's most high-profile killings. Two brothers – who were 12 and 13 at the time of the killing – were convicted of manslaughter in 2006.

Small Axe is a British anthology film series, created and directed by Steve McQueen. The anthology consists of five films that tell distinct stories about the lives of West Indian immigrants in London from the 1960s to the 1980s. Two episodes of the series were selected into the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. The series premiered on 15 November 2020 on BBC One in the United Kingdom and on 20 November 2020 on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. The title references a proverb – "Small axe fall big tree" or "If you are the big tree, we are the small axe" – that was popularised by Bob Marley in his 1973 song "Small Axe".
Red, White and Blue is a 2020 historical drama film directed by Steve McQueen and co-written by McQueen and Courttia Newland. It stars John Boyega as Leroy Logan, an officer in the London Metropolitan Police who founded the Black Police Association and attempted to reform the police force from within. The film was released as part of the anthology series Small Axe on BBC One on 29 November 2020, and released on Amazon Prime Video on 4 December 2020. It premiered as an opening film at the 58th New York Film Festival on 24 September 2020.
Alan James Brown is a retired British police officer who spent his entire career with the Metropolitan Police in London.
Janet Hills became president of the National Black Police Association (NBPA) in 2015-17. She was the first woman to be chair of the association in 2013. Her career in the London Metropolitan police force began at Brixton Police Station in 1991 and includes time in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Community Safety Unit and the Human Trafficking Unit. She grew up in Croydon, and her parents are Jamaican. She was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours list 2021 for services to Policing and to Community Relations.
Institutional racism has been acknowledged in the London Metropolitan Police since at least the 1970's and has recently received significant coverage.
