Lesley Veronica Campbell AM is an Australian endocrinologist and Professor of Medicine with a special interest in clinical diabetes, appetite and metabolism. She is a principal research fellow at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. [1]

Education and career

Campbell graduated from Sydney University in 1968. [2] She became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in Great Britain and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1973. She joined the Garvan Institute 1979 as a principal researcher and has remained there since and is the group leader of their Diabetes and Obesity Clinical Studies program. [3] She is also director of diabetes services at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. [4] She was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Campbell published more than 240 scientific papers. [2] She is an advocate of an attitude that does not stigmatise those that are overweight or the parents of obese children and points out that 30% of those considered as obese are actually in good health. Awards and recognition

Campbell was awarded Fellowship of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (1977) and the British Royal College of Physicians (1989). [1]

John Shine

Professor John Shine is an Australian biochemist and molecular biologist. Shine and Lynn Dalgarno discovered the nucleotide sequence, called the Shine-Dalgarno sequence, necessary for the initiation and termination of protein synthesis. He directed the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney from 1990 to 2011. In May 2018 Shine was elected President of the Australian Academy of Science.

Garvan Institute of Medical Research

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is an Australian biomedical research institute located in Darlinghurst, Sydney, New South Wales. Founded in 1963 by the Sisters of Charity as a research department of St Vincent's Hospital, it is now one of Australia's largest medical research institutions, with approximately 750 scientists, students and support staff. The executive director of the institute since 2018 is Professor Chris Goodnow.

John Mattick Australian molecular biologist (born 1950)

John Stanley Mattick is an Australian molecular biologist known for his efforts to assign function to non-coding DNA. Mattick was the executive director of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research from 2012 to 2018. He joined Genomics England in May 2018 as Chief Executive Officer. In October 2019, he joined the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Ann Janet Woolcock AO FAA FRACP was an Australian respiratory physician–scientist and one of the world's leading asthma experts. She contributed greatly to the field of asthma research and founded the Institute of Respiratory Medicine, Sydney, which is now known as the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.

Leslie Lazarus

Leslie "Les" Lazarus AO is an Australian endocrinologist who was one of the first co-Directors of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney from 1966 to 1969 and sole Director from 1969 to 1990. At the Garvan Institute he led a joint laboratory and clinical research team studying diabetes and pituitary hormone secretions, in particular the secretion and clinical uses of human growth hormone.

Vlado Perkovic is an Australian renal physician and researcher who is the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

Louise BaurAM FAHMS is an Australian paediatrician with a research interest in childhood obesity. In 2015 she was appointed professor and head of paediatrics and child health at the University of Sydney, and head of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Clinical School.

David J. Tiller AO is an Australian Professor of Medicine and past President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (1994-1996).

Susan Margaret Pond is an Australian scientist and technologist, active in business and academia, and recognised for her contributions to medicine, biotechnology, renewable energy and sustainability. She is the current President of the Royal Society of New South Wales.

Katherine Samaras is the laboratory head at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. She holds positions at St Vincent's Clinic, and University of New South Wales, as well as the University of Notre Dame.

Elizabeth Jane Elliott is an Australian clinician scientist. She is a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for services to paediatrics and child health, as well as an Elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science (AAHMS), Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW, and Fellow of the Academy of Child and Adolescent Health. She was the first female to win the James Cook Medal, awarded by the Royal Society of NSW for contributions to human welfare. Robert Michael Graham AO, FAA, FAHMS is an Australian-born clinician-scientist. He is the Des Renford Professor of Medicine at University of New South Wales. and the Head of the Molecular Cardiology and Biophysics Division at Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
