Leslie Friedlander was the first female cantor ordained by the Academy for Jewish Religion in New York, which occurred in 1993. [1] [2] She served eight years as Cantor of Temple Emanuel in New Hyde Park and eleven years as Cantor of Riverdale Temple in the Bronx, and currently serves at Temple Isaiah in Great Neck, New York, which she joined in 2011. [3] In 2006 she received a Commendation from the City of New York, Office of the Comptroller. [3] [4] In 2007 she received a Citation of Merit from the Bronx Borough President in recognition of her service and her contributions to Jewish children in the Bronx and her contributions as a leader in her role as a Jewish educator. The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is a Jewish seminary with three locations in the United States and one location in Jerusalem. Nita Sue Melnikoff Lowey is an American politician who formerly served as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1989 until 2021. She is a member of the Democratic Party. The group was led by the Pakistani Shahed Hussain, a criminal who was working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to avoid deportation for DMV fraud. Shahed Hussain has never been charged in the USA with any terrorism related offenses and was paid nearly $100,000 US Dollars by the FBI for his work on this plot.

Rebecca Garfein is a notable hazzan. She was born in Tallahassee, Florida, where she became a regular singer at her father’s synagogue. In 1985, thanks to a scholarship from the Shepherd School of Music, Garfein attended Rice University, from which she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of music. She earned a master's degree in sacred music and was invested as a cantor at HUC-JIR in 1993, after which she became the first cantor of Riverdale Temple in the Bronx, which was then a 53-year-old congregation. She is the first female senior cantor of Congregation Rodeph Sholom in New York City, and was the first female cantor to give a solo concert in Berlin, which she did in 1997, releasing a CD of the concert titled “Sacred Chants of the Contemporary Synagogue" in 1998. In 1998 at the Berlin Jewish Cultural Festival, she became the first female cantor to preside in a German synagogue. In 2001 Garfein was a soloist at the 350th anniversary concert of the Curaçao Jewish community.
