Letpao Haokip is an Indian politician from the state of Manipur. He is curerently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Minister of Tribal Affairs and Hills in the Government of Manipur headed by N. Biren Singh.

Political career

Haokip was first elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly in 2017 as a National People's Party (NPP) candidate from the Chandel constituency. NPP supported the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the formation of a minority government under N. Biren Singh, all its four winning candidates were appointed as ministers. Haokip was appointed as the Minister for Irrigation & Flood Control and Youth Affairs & Sports (2017–2022). [1] [2] [3] In June 2020, all the four NPP ministers resigned from the Cabinet due to a row over the dilution of portfolios of the NPP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Y. Joykumar Singh. Biren Singh patched up the differences by reallocating portfolios. Netpao Haokip received Water Resources portfolio after the reallocation. [4] [5]

In 2021, in the run up to the upcoming legislative assembly election, Haokip quit the NPP and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. [6] [7] He won the election from the Tengnoupal Constituency as BJP Candidate in 2022, and was appointed as the Minister for Tribal Affairs & Hills as well as Horticulture & Soil Conservation. [8]

Nongthombam Biren Singh is an Indian politician, former footballer and journalist who is currently serving as the 12th Chief Minister of Manipur since 2017 representing Heingang Assembly constituency in the Manipur Legislative Assembly since 2002 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Besides being the chairman of Shri Shri Govindaji Temple Board, he is the first incumbent Chief Minister who serves as the president of the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB), the temple development board of Lainingthou Sanamahi of the Sanamahi religion since 2021.

Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh is a politician from Manipur, India. He was minister of forest, horticulture, soil conservation and the department of municipal administration, housing & urban development (2017-2020) in the Biren Singh-led coalition government.

He was expelled from Indian National Congress in 2020 for voting in favour of BJP Rajya Sabha Candidate Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba. He joined Bharatiya Janata Party in November 2021. He is the eldest son of Rajkumar Jaichandra Singh, the first Union Minister from Manipur in the erstwhile ministry of Rajiv Gandhi. He was subsequently deputed as the Chief Minister of the State. His grandfather R.K. Birchandra Singh was the first Congress President of the State of Manipur when Manipur attained statehood. R.K. Imo Singh is also the President of Manipur Cricket Association, affiliated to BCCI.
