Licia Kokocinski

Licia Kokocinski (born 8 October 1951) is an Australian politician. She served as a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1988 to 1996, representing Melbourne West Province. She was the first woman from a non-English speaking background to be elected to the Victorian parliament. [1]

Biography

Kokocinski was born in Aquileia, Italy. She migrated to Australia at the age of four, and studied at Hadfield High School and the University High School Evening School, before graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1984. She worked in a number of equal opportunity roles and as a WorkCare rehabilitation adviser before gaining preselection to contest a seat in the Legislative Council at the 1988 state election. In parliament, Kokocinski served on the Social Development, Parliament of Victoria, Community Development and House Committees, and served on the board of the Melton campus of the Victoria University of Technology. Kokocinski was promoted to Secretary to Shadow Cabinet in March 1993, but only three months later, was cut out of a factional deal between the dominant left and right factions for preselection for the 1996 election, losing out to the right faction's Sang Nguyen. [3] [4] She subsequently attacked the party as being "not serious about recognising women's participation" and resigned from her Cabinet position. [5] [6] She subsequently campaigned for the introduction of affirmative action preselection policies within the party. [7] [8] Lacking preselection to recontest her seat, she retired at the 1996 election.

After leaving politics, Kokocinski served as the national policy director for the ARPA Over 50s Association. [9] Most recently, she has served as the Executive Director of disability rights organisation Action on Disabilities within Ethnic Communities. She was added to the Victorian Woman's Honour Roll in 2007. [10]

On 8 April 2019, Kokocinski was elected as a Councillor of the Shire of Hepburn in a by-election representing the Coliban Ward. [11] After serving in the role for a few months, she was subsequently elected as Mayor for the 2019-2020 year. [12]

Theo Charles Theophanous is a former Australian politician. He entered politics in 1988 as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Theophanous served from 1988 to 2006 as one of the two members for Jika Jika Province, before the reforms to the Victorian Legislative Council that introduced proportional representation. He served as a Minister in the Kirner Government and as the leader of the opposition in the Legislative Council from 1993 until 1999. From 2006 until 2010 he represented the Northern Metropolitan Region and served as Minister in the Bracks and Brumby Governments.

Natalie Hutchins Australian politician

Natalie Maree Hutchins, also known as Natalie Sykes-Hutchins, is an Australian politician. She has been a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since 2010, representing the electorates of Keilor (2010–2014) and Sydenham (2014–present). She was Minister for Local Government, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister for Industrial Relations in the First Andrews Ministry from December 2014 to December 2018. In June 2020, she rejoined the cabinet as Minister for Victim Support and Minister for Corrections, Youth Justice and Crime Prevention.

2014 Victorian state election

The 2014 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 29 November 2014, was for the 58th Parliament of Victoria. All 88 seats in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and 40 seats in the Victorian Legislative Council were up for election. The incumbent centre-right Coalition minority government, led by Liberal Party leader and Premier Denis Napthine and National Party leader and Deputy Premier Peter Ryan, was defeated by the centre-left Labor Party opposition, led by Daniel Andrews. The Greens won two lower house seats, their first Legislative Assembly seats in a Victorian state election, whilst increasing their share of upper house seats. The new Andrews Ministry was sworn in on 4 December 2014.

2018 Victorian state election Election for the 59th Parliament of Victoria

The 2018 Victorian state election was held on Saturday, 24 November 2018 to elect the 59th Parliament of Victoria. All 88 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 40 seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The first-term incumbent Labor government, led by Premier Daniel Andrews, won a second four-year term, defeating the Liberal/National Coalition opposition, led by Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. Minor party the Greens led by Samantha Ratnam also contested the election.
