Make Believe was an indie rock band, initially formed as a touring version of Joan of Arc. The band was initially composed of eccentric voiced singer Tim Kinsella, guitarist Sam Zurick, bassist Bobby Burg, and drummer/keyboardist Nate Kinsella. After 3 months of touring as Joan Of Arc the quartet returned home and decided to begin writing new songs with a more aggressive approach. Following a self-titled 5 track EP, their first full-length Shock of Being was released on October 4, 2005, followed by Of Course in 2006.

Mike Kinsella is an American multi-instrumentalist involved in many Illinois-based bands such as Cap'n Jazz, Owls, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football, and Owen. He was first recognized in the music scene in Cap'n Jazz, formed by his brother Tim in 1989, at the age of 12. In 2001, Kinsella began his current solo project, Owen, in which he performs vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, loops, etc. Kinsella was also in a band called The Shirts and Skins, with his wife. In 2013, he released two EPs with his latest project, Their / They're / There, featuring Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It. and Matthew Frank of Loose Lips Sink Ships.

In Rape Fantasy and Terror Sex We Trust is the sixth full-length album by Joan of Arc, released in 2003 on Perishable Records. The songs were recorded in the same sessions as So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness, and the album is thought to be something of a companion album to that record. The title track was created as an attempt by Tim Kinsella to capture the effect Bauhaus' The Sky's Gone Out had on him "when he was 10yrs old and accidentally bought it before he was ready to hear it". This is one of the few Joan of Arc albums not to receive a vinyl release.
