Lilly de Castella (born Elizabeth Anne Anderson) was an Australian colonist and winemaker. She is the eponym of the Shire of Lillydale and Lilydale, Victoria.

Biography

De Castella was born Elizabeth Anne Anderson at Norfolk Island, one of four daughters of Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Anderson, a military officer of the 50th Regiment of Foot and a statesman, and Mary Anderson, a pioneer member of the Melbourne Mechanics' Institute. [1] Her father, who was commandant of the convict settlement from 1835 to 1939 at Norfolk, was one of eight nominated members of the Victorian Legislative Council. [2] De Castella was called Lilly by her family. In 1848 her family settled in South Yarra. Living in Yarra, her family often socialized with other members of Yarra society including Sir Charles Hotham, Charles La Trobe and Clement Hodgkinson.

In 1856 she married Swiss nobleman and winemaker Paul de Castella, who owned a vineyard near Yering. [1] [3] [4] They had one son and three daughters. [1] Her husband was the brother of Hubert de Castella.

The town of Lilydale, Victoria, and the former Shire of Lillydale, are named after her. [5] [6] [7]

The Warburton Highway is a 34 kilometre west–east semi-rural highway starting on the eastern fringes of Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) at the Maroondah Highway just after Lilydale, connecting Melbourne to the Yarra Valley wine region and its towns, as well as Melbourne's closest mountain peak to receive regular snowfall, Mount Donna Buang. The entire road falls within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area and is wholly managed by VicRoads. It is a single carriageway for its entire length, being completely sealed since 1941, with one lane in each direction and occasional overtaking lanes being provided. Speed limits range from 50 to 60 km/h through townships and 70–80 km/h elsewhere. Because of the lack of the standard 100 km/h rural speed limit and high traffic volumes, Victoria Police maintain a high level of patrol and vigilance.

Baron Frédéric Guillaume de Pury was a Swiss-Australian winemaker, farmer, statesman, and diplomat. From 1875 to 1890 he served as the Swiss Honorary Consul to Australia in Melbourne and was also a justice of the peace. He exported wine, produced from his vineyards in Australia, to England, France, and other European countries.
