Lipika Singh Darai is an Indian filmmaker, film director and sound recordist from Odisha. [2] She has won four National Film Awards. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Early life and education

Darai was born in Damasahi, Odisha, India to both parents from the Ho community. [1] She is based in Bhubaneswar.

Darai graduated from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2010, specialising in sound recording.

Career

Recording

Darai started her career as a sound recordist for a Hindi short film Gaarud [1] , receiving the 57th National Film Awards for audiography in 2010 in the non-fiction category when she was a student at FTII. [2]

Direction

In 2012, Darai directed her debut film Eka Gacha Eka Maṇisha Eka Samudra (English: A Tree a Man a Sea) in Odia. [6] In 2014, she directed Kankee O Saapo which won the National Film Awards in the narration/voice-over category. [6] In 2015, she co-directed Some Stories Around Witches along with Indraneel Lahiri, a film about the humanitarian crisis surrounding the cases of witch-hunts. [7] In 2017, she directed The Waterfall, receiving the National Film Awards. The Waterfall is a fictional film in Hindi and English about her school in the context of the growing distance between humans and nature. The film later was selected to be screened in 700 schools across India. [2] In 2021, she directed Backstage. This Odia film depicts different marionette art forms of Odisha and the work of master rod-puppeteer Maguni Charan Kuanr and Rabana Chhaya puppeteer Gouranga Charan Dash, and folk arts in the context of the caste system in India. [8]

Research

Darai was joined as an associate fellow for the City as Studio project of Centre for the Study of Developing Societies's Sarai Project. [9]

Pagala Premi was his first movie, for which he earned an Odisha State Film Awards for Best Actor. Sabyasachi got his second state award for Emiti Bi Prema Hue. He won the Filmfare Awards East as best actor for Mu Eka Tumara in 2013.

Natabara Samantaray was an Odia writer and literary critic. Some of his known literary historical works are Odia Sahityara Itihasa (1803-1920), Adhunika Odia Sahityara Bhittibhumi and Vyasakabi Fakirmohan. His critical review included works of many noted Odia authors like Fakir Mohan Senapati and Radhanath Ray. His historical research includes all of the major Odia writings published during 1803 until 1920 which accentuate the British Raj and its impact in coastal Odisha, and a critical analysis of the modern Odia literature.

Kanhu Charan Mohanty was an Indian Odia language novelist who wrote fifty-six novels in a career spanning over six decades from 1930 to 1985. He is considered "one of the most popular and celebrated novelists of Odisa". Mohanty was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958 for his novel, Kaa, published in 1956, and was one of the fellows of the Sahitya Akademi. Mohanty died on 6 April 1994 at the age of 87.

Prem Anand is an Indian music director and composer. He usually works in Odia film and television industry. In 2006, he started his career as a music director through the Odia movie Tu Eka Ama Saha Bharasa and worked as a music director in more than 60 Odia films. Apart from Odia films, he composed music for Odia daily shops, Bhajans and Jatra songs. In 2009, Anand worked as a music director for the Hindi film Dekha Bhai Dekh in 2019, he composed music for Bollywood film Luv U Turn. Apart from Odia and Hindi films, he composed music for Marathi and Bengali films. He composed the 2023 Men's FIH Hockey World Cup anthem.

Himansu Sekhar Khatua is an Indian director, educationalist, and journalist. He directed the national film award winning movies Sunya Swaroop and Kathantara in 1996 and 2005 respectively. Bhagabati Charan Panigrahi was an Indian Odia writer and India’s freedom struggle revolutionary/ martyr. He was a founding member of Netaji's Forward Bloc. He was the founding secretary of Communist Party of India in Odisha. He wrote around a dozen short stories before he was mysteriously murdered while under arrest of British India Police in 1943. He was a close associate of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Gopalakrusna Pattanayaka was an Odia poet & composer of Odissi music. His Odissi songs in various traditional ragas and talas are widely sung across the state, as well as other allied traditional artforms of Odisha, such as pala. The 20th-century Odissi musician, vocalist & binākara Apanna Panigrahi, also from the poet's hometown, was well-known for his renditions of Gopalakrusna's lyrics. Some of the most iconic Odissi songs, such as Syamaku Juhara Tara Premaku Juhara Ma, Jala Ani Jai Kali Kalindasutaku, Sangini Re Rasarangini Re, Kadamba Bane Bansi Bajila Re, Uthilu Ede Begi Kahinkire, Ki Nadare Prana Sangini, Manasija Mana Mohana are creations of Gopalakrusna. Many of his songs are popular abhinaya items in Odissi dance.

Iti Rani Samanta is an Indian columnist, journalist and film producer. She won the Odisha State Film Awards in 2014 for Best Story Writer. She is also the editor of the monthly family magazine The Kadambini and the children’s magazine The Kunikatha.

Kavya Keeran is an Indian actress and model who has mostly appeared in Odia and Hindi films. She started her film career in Ollywood in 2013 through the 1st Odia 3D film Kaunri Kanya along with Pupul Bhuyan. In 2015, she debuted in Bollywood thorough Rang-E-Ishq. In 2019, she got the Odisha State Film Awards for Odia Film Khusi. In 2022, Kavya featured in a music video, Tu Ki Kitta by Rishi Singh.

Pupul Bhuyan is an Indian actress, television presenter, and model who has mostly appeared in Odia films, telefilms, daily shops, and reality shows. She started her film career in Ollywood in 2013 through the 1st Odia 3D film Kaunri Kanya along with Kavya Keeran. In 2018, she was crowned as the winner at Opera Mrs. India Global pageant.
