Lisa Black (born 1982) is a sculpture artist and jeweller based in Auckland, New Zealand. Her work often combines taxidermied animals and preserved insects with found metal and sometimes working mechanical parts, [1] and has been described as "Steampunk" art, although she does not use the term herself. [2] She self categorizes her work by adding "Fixed" to the titles of her pieces made to look living, and "Departed" to the pieces made to look deceased. [3] [4] The first work in the Fixed series was Fixed Fawn. Her work has been featured in Marie Claire [5] Magazine, The New Zealand Herald, [1] and the television show New Zealand's Next Top Model.

Taxidermy is the art of preserving an animal's body via mounting or stuffing, for the purpose of display or study. Animals are often, but not always, portrayed in a lifelike state. The word taxidermy describes the process of preserving the animal, but the word is also used to describe the end product, which are called taxidermy mounts or referred to simply as "taxidermy". The word taxidermy is derived from the Greek words taxis and derma. Taxis means "arrangement", and derma means "skin". The word taxidermy translates to "arrangement of skin".

The common pheasant is a bird in the pheasant family (Phasianidae). The genus name comes from Latin phasianus, "pheasant". The species name colchicus is Latin for "of Colchis", a country on the Black Sea where pheasants became known to Europeans. Phasianus diverged from the genus Gallus, the genus of junglefowl and domesticated chickens, about 20 million years ago.

Len Lye

Leonard Charles Huia Lye was a New Zealand artist known primarily for his experimental films and kinetic sculpture. His films are held in archives including the New Zealand Film Archive, British Film Institute, Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Pacific Film Archive at University of California, Berkeley. Lye's sculptures are found in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Berkeley Art Museum. Although he became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1950, much of his work went to New Zealand after his death, where it is housed at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth.

Abney Park (band) Steampunk band

Abney Park, a steampunk band based in Seattle, was responsible for initiating the steampunk musical subculture, transforming steampunk from a little known literary genre to a popular movement, and inspiring many later steampunk bands, writers and craftsmen. Their name comes from Abney Park Cemetery in London (UK). Formerly a goth band, Abney Park have transformed their look and sound and have been called the "quintessential" spokespeople of steampunk culture.

Angela Singer

Angela Singer is an artist of British and New Zealand nationality who lives in Wellington, New Zealand. An animal rights activist, she addresses the way in which people exploit animals and the environment through the repurposing and remodelling of vintage taxidermy, a process she calls "de-taxidermy". Since the 1990s her work has been exhibited both in New Zealand and internationally.

Michael Te Rakato Parekōwhai is a New Zealand sculptor and a professor at the University of Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts. He is of Ngāriki Rotoawe and Ngāti Whakarongo descent and his mother is Pākehā.

Petah Coyne American sculptor and photographer

Petah Coyne is a contemporary American sculptor and photographer best known for her large and small scale hanging sculptures and floor installations. Working in innovative and disparate materials, her media has ranged from the organic to the ephemeral, from incorporating dead fish, mud, sticks, hay, hair, black sand, specially-formulated and patented wax, satin ribbons, silk flowers, to more recently, velvet, taxidermy, and cast wax statuary. Coyne's sculptures and photographs have been the subject of more than 30 solo museum exhibitions.

Steampunk HQ

A yard also contains a collection of other industrial parts and projects in various stages of completion.

Julia deVille New Zealand artist (born 1982)

Julia deVille is an artist, jeweller and taxidermist who only uses subjects in her taxidermy that have died of natural causes. She is an advocate for animal rights, and began including taxidermy in her art work in 2002, combining it with her jewellery making practice to produce small sculptures and installations. DeVille’s interest in memento mori traditions of the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries and Victorian mourning jewellery inform her wearable pieces.

Jane Yandle was a professional furrier and taxidermist noted for her taxidermy of New Zealand birds, some of which are still on museum display more than 100 years after her death.

Jeff Thomson is a New Zealand sculptor best known for his colourful sculptural works fabricated from corrugated iron. These range in size from a life-sized giraffe to gallery-friendly wall hangings.
