Lisa Dawn Falkenberg (born July 12, 1978) is an American journalist. She is the Houston Chronicle vice president/editor of opinion.

Early life and education

Falkenberg was born on July 12, [1] 1978, and raised in Seguin, Texas, [2] by father and mother Carl Leroy and Connie Sue Falkenberg ( née , Koehler). [3] She has an older sister, Lorie Ann, [4] and a younger sister, Holly Sue. [5]

She began her career as a journalist writing for her high school newspaper. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and was awarded a degree in journalism in 2000. [6]

Journalism career

For the next four years, Falkenberg worked for the Associated Press. [6] In 2004, she was named the Texas AP writer of the year. [7] The following year, she became a state correspondent for the Houston Chronicle . She became a columnist for that paper in 2007. [6]

In 2014, Falkenberg's editor nominated her for the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. She was one of two finalists, but did not win. [7] The following year, she won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary, for a series of columns she had written about corrupt grand jury practices in Texas. [6] The Pulitzer announcement noted that her win stemmed from "vividly-written, groundbreaking columns about grand jury abuses that led to a wrongful conviction and other egregious problems in the legal and immigration systems." [8]

Personal life

Falkenberg was married on June 7, 2008, in Houston, Texas, to fellow journalist currently with the Houston Chronicle, Mizanur Rahman, [9] and they have two children together. [10] Lisa filed for divorce on August 8, 2016. Their divorce was final on Jul 5, 2017

Andrea Yates American murder defendant

Andrea Pia Yates is an American woman from Houston, Texas, who confessed to drowning her five children in their bathtub on June 20, 2001. She had been suffering for some time from severe postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and schizophrenia. During her trial, she was represented by Houston criminal defense attorney George Parnham. Chuck Rosenthal, the district attorney in Harris County, asked for the death penalty in her 2002 trial. Her case placed the M'Naghten rules, along with the irresistible impulse test, a legal test for sanity, under close public scrutiny in the United States. She was convicted of capital murder, but the jury refused the death penalty option. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. The verdict was overturned on appeal, in light of false testimony by one of the supposed expert psychiatric witnesses.

Margaret Long Wisdom High School, formerly Robert E. Lee High School, is a publicly funded secondary school located in Southwest Houston, Texas, United States 77057. The Houston Independent School District, the 7th largest school district in the United States, operates Wisdom, a public admission school that enrolls grades 9 through 12. 2022 Pulitzer Prize 2022 awards in American journalism and other fields

The 2022 Pulitzer Prizes were awarded by the Pulitzer Prize Board for work during the 2021 calendar year on May 9, 2022. The awards highlighted coverage of major stories in the U.S. that year, including the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, for which The Washington Post won the Public Service prize, considered the most prestigious award. The New York Times received three awards, the most of any publication. Insider received its first Pulitzer.
