The Local Hero Award [1] is a part of the Australian of the Year awards. It commenced in 2003 and is sponsored by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

Contents

The Local Hero Award acknowledges extraordinary contributions made by Australians in their local community. A Local Hero from each state and territory is chosen each year, with one of the eight state and territory Local Heroes announced as Australia's Local Hero on Australia Day eve each year.

AFL Rising Star Award

The AFL Rising Star is an Australian rules football award presented annually to the player adjudged the best young player in the Australian Football League (AFL) for the year. It was first presented in the 1993 season, and was won by Nathan Buckley, playing for the Brisbane Bears. The recipient of the AFL Rising Star has been awarded the Ron Evans Medal since 2007, named in honour of the former AFL Commission chairman following his death that year.

Sarah Hanson-Young Australian politician

Sarah Coral Hanson-Young is an Australian politician who has been a Senator for South Australia since July 2008, representing the Australian Greens. She is the youngest woman to be elected to federal parliament, winning election at the age of 25 and taking office at the age of 26. She was the youngest person ever elected to the Senate, until Jordon Steele-John was elected on a recount in 2017.

Sam Kerr Australian soccer player

Samantha May Kerr is an Australian professional soccer player who plays as a forward for Chelsea in the FA Women's Super League and the Australia women's national soccer team, which she has captained since 2019. As of 2022, Kerr is the all-time leading Australian international scorer, both male and female, surpassing Tim Cahill's previous record of 50 goals, and is the all-time leading scorer in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States. She is the only female football player to have won the Golden Boot in three different leagues and three different continents – the W-League (Australia) in 2017–18 and 2018–19, the NWSL in 2017, 2018, 2019 and the FAWSL (Europe) in 2020–21.

Georgie Stone Australian actress and transgender rights activist

Georgie Robertson Stone is an Australian actress, writer and transgender rights advocate. At the age of 10, Stone was the youngest person to receive hormone blockers in Australia, which set a precedent that eventually changed the law that compelled transgender children and their families to apply to the Family Court of Australia to access stage one treatment. She continues to advocate for transgender children, and is one of the most visible transgender people in Australia.

Elizabeth Cameron Dalman is an Australian choreographer, teacher, and performer. She founded Australian Dance Theatre and was its Artistic Director from 1965 to 1975.

Michelle Simmons British-Australian quantum physicist

Michelle Yvonne Simmons, is a Scientia Professor of Quantum Physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales and has twice been an Australian Research Council Federation Fellow and is an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow. She is the Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation & Communication Technology and is recognised internationally as the creator of the field of atomic electronics. She was the inaugural editor-in-chief of npj Quantum Information, an academic journal publishing articles in the emerging field of quantum information science. On 25 January 2018, Simmons was named as the 2018 Australian of the Year for her work and dedication to quantum information science. On 10 June 2019, Simmons was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of her "distinguished service to science education as a leader in quantum and atomic electronics and as a role model."

Tarang Chawla is an Indian-born Australian writer, gender equality and mental health advocate, and former Independent political candidate.

Dinesh Palipana OAM is an Australian doctor, lawyer, scientist and disability advocate. He is the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland, Australia. He is the second person with quadriplegia to graduate as a doctor in Australia and the first with spinal cord injury.

Eddie Woo Australian online maths teacher

Edward Kent Woo is an Australian secondary school teacher and writer best known for his online mathematics lessons published on YouTube. In 2018, Woo was awarded the Australia's Local Hero Award.

Baker Boy Indigenous Australian rapper, dancer, artist, and actor

Danzal James Baker, known professionally as Baker Boy, is an Indigenous Australian rapper, dancer, artist, and actor. A Yolngu man, Baker Boy is known for performing original hip-hop songs incorporating both English and Yolŋu Matha.

Story Factory Australian not-for-profit organisation

The Story Factory is an Australian not-for-profit organisation designed to help indigenous and disadvantaged children aged between 7 and 17 years to develop their writing and storytelling skills. The programs run by the Story Factory aim to help young people, particularly those most at risk of losing confidence and then losing interest in schooling. The Story Factory conducts programs at its two creative writing centres, as short and long term residencies at primary and secondary schools, and as one-off visits.

James Sunter Muecke is an Australian ophthalmologist working in Adelaide, South Australia. He was the 2020 Australian of the Year, having been South Australian of the Year. He was sworn in as South Australia's new Lieutenant Governor on 27 January 2022, succeeding Brenda Wilson.

The A-League Women Young Footballer of the Year is an annual association football award presented to a player in the Australian A-League Women.

Isobel Marshall is a South Australian social entrepreneur and medical student who was named Young Australian of the Year for 2021.
