The Florida Department of Corrections [1] is divided into four regions, each representing a specific geographical area of the state. Region I [2] is the panhandle area, Region II [3] is the north-east and north-central areas, Region III [4] consist of central Florida and Region IV which covers the southern portion of the peninsula.
There are several types of facilities in Florida, ranging from community work release centers to maximum security institutions.
The State of Florida operates almost all of its major institutions and most of its lesser facilities. Privately operated prisons in Florida are called "Correctional Facilities" (for example, Lake City Correctional Facility) while state operated facilities are called "Correctional Institutions" (i.e. Union Correctional Institution). Florida State Prison is the only facility in the state officially titled a "Prison".[ citation needed ]

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is a state agency of Mississippi that operates prisons. It has its headquarters in Jackson. As of 2020 Burl Cain is the commissioner.
The Colorado Department of Corrections is the principal department of the Colorado state government that operates the state prisons. It has its headquarters in the Springs Office Park in unincorporated El Paso County, Colorado, near Colorado Springs. The Colorado Department of Corrections runs 20 state-run prisons and also has been affiliated with 7 for-profit prisons in Colorado, of which the state currently contracts with 3 for-profit prisons.
Arizona State Prison Complex – Phoenix is one of 13 prison facilities operated by the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC). ASPC-Phoenix is located in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, which includes a minimum security unit near Globe, the Arizona Correctional Facility for Woman (ACW), and ASPC-Aspen.
Parklea Correctional Centre, a privately managed Australian maximum and minimum security prison for males, is located at Parklea, in the north-western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. The facility is operated by MTC Ventia and has a current capacity for 1,350 inmates. The Centre accepts prisoners charged and convicted under New South Wales and/or Commonwealth legislation and incorporates a minimum-security work-release centre for inmates nearing release with a capacity of 120. A Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional unit is incorporated within the centre.
The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) is a Cabinet-level agency within the Tennessee state government responsible for the oversight of more than 20,000 convicted offenders in Tennessee's fourteen prisons, three of which are privately managed by CoreCivic. The department is headed by the Tennessee Commissioner of Correction, who is currently Frank Strada. TDOC facilities' medical and mental health services are provided by Corizon. Juvenile offenders not sentenced as adults are supervised by the independent Tennessee Department of Children's Services, while inmates granted parole or sentenced to probation are overseen by the Department of Correction (TDOC)/Department of Parole. The agency is fully accredited by the American Correctional Association. The department has its headquarters on the sixth floor of the Rachel Jackson Building in Nashville.
The Broward Correctional Institution (BCI) was a correctional facility located in the former Country Estates CDP, and later in Southwest Ranches, Florida, operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. The Region IV Correctional Facility Office was located on the grounds of Broward Correctional Institution. The prison was in proximity to Pembroke Pines. It was located along Sheridan Street, near U.S. Route 27.

Lowell Correctional Institution is a women's prison in unincorporated Marion County, Florida, north of Ocala, in the unincorporated area of Lowell. A part of the Florida Department of Corrections, it serves as the primary prison for women in the state. Almost 3,000 women are incarcerated in the complex, which includes the Lowell Annex. As of 2015 2,696 women are in the main Lowell CI, making it the largest prison for women in the United States; its prison population became larger than that of the Central California Women's Facility that year.
The Oliver J. Bell Unit is a prison for men in Cleveland, Texas, operated by Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). The roughly 40-acre (16 ha) facility is .25 mi (0.40 km) north of downtown Cleveland. The TDCJ refers to the prison as the "Oliver J. Bell Unit", while GEO Group, the former operator, referred to it as the Cleveland Correctional Center. The facility is along U.S. Route 59.
Arizona State Prison – Kingman is a privately run minimum/medium-security prison designed to hold 3500 prisoners. It is located in unincorporated Mohave County, Arizona, in Golden Valley. When the idea of the prison was being sold to the residents of Golden Valley it was promised that it would be a prison only for Dui offenders. It was operated by the Management and Training Corporation under contract to the Arizona Department of Corrections until August 2015. MTC had been criticized for allowing the homicidal escape of three violent prisoners in 2010. The state began seeking an alternate provider after it found MTC failed to control riots on July 1, 2 and 4, at Kingman, in July 2015.
Management & Training Corporation or MTC is a contractor that manages private prisons and United States Job Corps centers, based in Centerville, Utah. MTC's core businesses are corrections, education and training, MTC medical, and economic & social development. MTC operates 21 correctional facilities in eight states. MTC also operates or partners in operating 22 of the 119 Job Corps centers across the country. They also operate in Great Britain, under the name MTCNovo.
The Suwannee Correctional Institution is a Level 6 security prison facility for adult males at Live Oak, Florida, two miles west of Wellborn. The camp was established in 2009. The total staff is 724 and it has a capacity of 1,505 prisoners. There was an FBI investigation after the death of a prisoner in 2014.
The Apalachee Correctional Institution, East Unit is a state prison for men located in Sneads, Jackson County, Florida, owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. This facility has a mix of security levels, including minimum, medium, and close, and houses adult male offenders. Apalachee Correctional Institution East Unit first opened in 1949 and has a maximum capacity of 1322 prisoners.
Northwest Florida Reception Center is a state prison for men located in Chipley, Washington County, Florida, owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. The facility was originally known as the "Washington Correctional Institution." NWFRC opened in 1994 with a mix of security levels and a capacity of 1303.
The Central Florida Reception Center is a state prison for men located in Orlando, Orange County, Florida, which is owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. This facility was opened in 1988 and has a maximum capacity of 1659 prisoners, at a mix of security levels, as an inmate intake and processing center.
The Gadsden Correctional Facility is a private state prison for women located in Quincy, Gadsden County, Florida, operated by Management and Training Corporation (MTC) under contract with the Florida Department of Corrections. This facility was opened in 1995 and has a maximum capacity of 1544 prisoners.
The Florida Women's Reception Center (FWRC) is a state prison for women located in Ocala, Marion County, Florida, owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections.
Marion Correctional Institution is a state prison for men in unincorporated Marion County, Florida, near Ocala. It is owned and operated by the Florida Department of Corrections. The facility houses a maximum of 1324 inmates at a mix of security levels. It stands near to Florida's Florida Women's Reception Center and Lowell Correctional Institution, both women's facilities.
The Gregory S. Coleman Unit, formerly known as the Lockhart Unit, is a state prison for women located in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas, operated by Management and Training Corporation under contract with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
