Gazetted officers are appointed from Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) of Union Public Service Commission while non-gazetted officers are recruited by Staff Selection Commission.

Assistant superintendent, or assistant superintendent of police (ASP), is a rank that was used by police forces in the British Empire and is still used in many police forces in the Commonwealth. The Superintendent of Police (SP) is a rank in Indian police forces held by an officer who serves as the head of a rural police district.
