College Of Engineering Pune (COEP) Technological University is a unitary public university of the Government of Maharashtra, situated in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Established in 1854, it is the 3rd oldest engineering institute in India, after College of Engineering, Guindy (1794) and IIT Roorkee (1847). The students and alumni are colloquially referred to as COEPians. On 23 June 2022, Government of Maharashtra issued a notification regarding conversion of the college into an independent technological university. On 24 March 2022, both the houses of the state government passed the CoEP Technological University bill, which has conferred a unitary state university status on the institute.

Somaiya Vidyavihar University is a private university located in the Vidyavihar suburb of Mumbai, India. The Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE), a sister institution of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, is an engineering college in central Mumbai, established in the year 2005 to deliver technical education to all, with a preferential option for economically disadvantaged and Christian students. The institute is managed by the Society of Jesus, and is affiliated to Mumbai University, approved by AICTE New Delhi, and recognized by Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra. XIE is a member of AJIT, the Association of Jesuit Institutes of Technology and IAJES. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India . Since XIE is affiliated to Mumbai University, it follows its syllabus and examination system.

Modern education was introduced to Maharashtra region during the 19th century by British colonial administration. Census of 2011 showed literacy rates in the state for males and females were around 78% and 67% respectively. Education at different levels in the state is provided by the state, government supported charities, or private institutions. There are also a number of institutes offering vocational training.

It designs and implements diploma, post diploma and advanced diploma programs to affiliated institutions. The board was established in 1963 to cater the increasing needs of affiliated institutions and their students.
