From 1908-1913 it was known as Junior Rovers Cup which was contested by school and college teams of Bombay, with the trophy originally provided by G.N. Nadkarni. It is hosted by the Mumbai Football Association. The Cup was not held in 1914-1918 due to World War I but was not immediately revived after the war.

State football leagues in India

There are currently a total of 37 state associations affiliated with the national governing body AIFF. Most of the state associations organise and have own affiliated football competitions in their respective states. The state leagues operate as a system of promotion and relegation with the national leagues such as I-League Qualifiers, Indian Women's League and Futsal Club Championship. Clubs of national leagues also participate in their respective state leagues.
