The following is a list of the 6 schools who field men's ice hockey teams in NCAA Division II competition.

History

Second-tier ice hockey has twice collapsed since 1980. Its current iteration is solely a result of the NCAA policy barring Division II schools from participating in Division III tournament which would have prevented those conferences from receiving an automatic bid into the National Tournament. Because only six schools play at the D-II level, no NCAA Tournament is currently being held (as of 2023). A seventh school, Stonehill, left the D-II ranks in July 2022 when it moved its athletic program to the Division I Northeast Conference.^[1]

The teams comprising the Division II level played in Division III conferences until 2009 but have been playing their conference tournaments since 2000.

As of 2023–24, no women's ice hockey programs operate at the Division II level. Five of the six D-II men's ice hockey schools (Assumption, Franklin Pierce, Post, Saint Anselm, Saint Michael's) field women's varsity teams; all compete in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance, a fully recognized league at the National Collegiate level (the de facto equivalent of Division I).

The ECAC Northeast was an intercollegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division III as a hockey-only conference. For many years it was one of the three men's hockey conferences that operated under the umbrella of the Eastern College Athletic Conference; the others were the ECAC East, and the ECAC West. Member institutions were located in the New England region of the United States, in the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The following is a list of teams that have made appearances in the National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship listed by their conference. The championship has existed since the 2000–2001 season and groups include the university teams of Divisions I and II of the NCAA.

The New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) is a women's college ice hockey conference in the United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference. As of the current 2023–24 NCAA hockey season, the conference is made up of eight teams, with two each in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and one each in New York and Vermont.

The LIU Sharks women's ice hockey team represents Long Island University in NCAA Division I ice hockey competition as a member of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA). They play their home games at Islanders Iceworks in Syosset, New York and Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, New York.

NCAA Division II independent schools are teams that compete in NCAA ice hockey but are not members of a conference. There are currently no independents at the Division II level, however, several teams were previously independents while under D-II classification.

The Stonehill Skyhawks men's ice hockey team represents Stonehill College in NCAA Division I ice hockey. On April 5, 2022, the school announced that they were promoting all of their varsity programs to Division I for the 2022–23 academic year.

The 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began on October 1, 2022, and concluded with the NCAA championship on April 8, 2023. This was the 75th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held, and was US college hockey's 129th year overall.

The 2022–23 Stonehill Skyhawks men's ice hockey season was the 44th season of play for the program and 1st at the Division I level. The Skyhawks represented Stonehill College and were coached by David Borges in his 9th season.

The 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season was the 129th season of play for varsity ice hockey in the United States. The regular season began on October 1, 2022 and concluded on March 11, 2023. Two programs played their first Division I games this season while a third restarted its program.
