In addition to university-wide student unions that represent all students, or all students based on enrolment status (undergraduate, graduate, or part-time), there are some universities with faculty-specific student societies. These include Arts and Science Students’ Union (ASSU) at the University of Toronto and Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS) at Queen's University.
Federated universities and colleges are affiliated with larger institutions, but maintain their own autonomy and are governed as separate universities by their own provincial Acts. [1]

Faculty Student Societies are the oldest form of student governance within Canada, with the University of Toronto, UCLIT being the first democratically elected student government society founded in 1854 on February 22. Faculty Student Societies are the beating heart of student life within each university faculty, acting as the umbrella organization. Key characteristics that make faculty-student societies different than student unions are that student societies solely focus on student life, mental well-being, professional development, and fellowship among a given faculty/college and do not tinker so much with the administrative academics side. Faculty Student Societies always have a membership fee/levy students pay through tuition. Student Societies give the most collegiate traditional experiences to their collective memberships by having a mascot costume, providing frosh weeks, graduation galas, formals, frost weeks, funding, and student-facing services. Other aspects some student societies have are houses under the umbrella that help students identify more closely with each other, similar to Harry Potter's four houses (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw).

The University of Sudbury is a bilingual and tri-cultural university in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. It provides undergraduate programming in both French and English in Religious Studies, Philosophy, Indigenous Studies, and in French in Journalism and Folklore. It was a federated school of Laurentian University until May 1, 2021, when Laurentian terminated its relationships with all of its federated schools as part of the 2021 Laurentian University financial crisis; it was subsequently announced that the University of Sudbury will continue operations as an independent French-language university.
The University of Waterloo is a public research university with a main campus in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The main campus is on 404 hectares of land adjacent to uptown Waterloo and Waterloo Park. Laurentian University, officially Laurentian University of Sudbury, is a mid-sized bilingual public university in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, incorporated on March 28, 1960. Laurentian offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate-level, and doctorate degrees. Laurentian is the largest bilingual provider of distance education in Canada. The college was formerly federated with Thornloe University, Huntington University, and the University of Sudbury. Laurentian severed the federation during 2021 insolvency proceedings, ending 60-year relationships, and triggering lawsuits.

Association of Colleges and Universities of the Canadian Francophonie is an association of community colleges and universities in minority francophone communities in Canada, through cooperation between its member institutions. The 2021-22 Laurentian University Crisis is a controversial and unprecedented financial crisis at Laurentian University in northern Ontario, Canada. After experiencing financial difficulties over a period of years, the university filed for creditor protection on February 1, 2021. The university subsequently closed 69 undergraduate and graduate programs and terminated 195 faculty and staff with little notice or severance. The federated universities of Laurentian eliminated 143 positions. Approximately 932 students were affected. It also marked the first time in Canadian history that a public university sought to restructure under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA).
