The San Diego State Aztecs baseball program is a baseball team that represents San Diego State University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Mountain West Conference. San Diego State has had eight head coaches since the program began competing in 1926.

John Hancock

John Hancock, who led the team for the 1926 season, is the first recorded coach of San Diego State.

Lee Waymire

Lee Waymire was San Diego State's second coach, serving for the 1927 season.

Harold G. Brucker

Harold was the first coach to remain more than one year, coaching the Aztecs in 1928 and 1929.

Morris Gross

After failing to field a team in 1930, Morris Gross coached the Aztecs in 1931 and 1932.

Charles R. Smith

After again failing to field a team in 1933, 1934, and 1935, Charles R. Smith took the program over, becoming the first San Diego State coach with an extended tenure. Smith coached the Aztecs from 1936 through 1964, with a three-year interruption from 1943 to 1945 during which time no team was fielded.

Lyle Olsen

Lyle Olsen succeeded Smith, coaching the Aztecs from 1965 through 1971.

Jim Dietz

Jim Dietz coached the Aztecs for 31 years, from 1972 through 2002. His record of 1230–751–18 makes him one of the winningest college baseball coaches of all time. Dietz coached a number of players who went on to successful Major League Baseball careers, including Bud Black and Tony Gwynn. He took the position at San Diego State in 1971 a week after accepting and then turning down an offer to coach basketball at Lewis–Clark Normal Schoolnow Lewis–Clark State College. [1]

Tony Gwynn

A native of Long Beach, California, and an alumnus of San Diego State, Tony Gwynn returned to coach his alma mater after the end of his 20-year Hall of Fame career. [2] Gwynn was hired in the fall of 2001 to replace Dietz following the 2002 season. [3]

The Aztecs' home field was renamed Tony Gwynn Stadium in his honor in 1997. [4]

Mark Martinez

Mark Martinez took over as head coach after Tony Gwynn died from cancer in 2014.

He was a 15-time All-Star, recognized for his skills both on offense and defense with seven Silver Slugger Awards and five Gold Glove Awards. Gwynn was the rare player in his era that stayed with a single team his entire career, and he played in the only two World Series appearances in San Diego's franchise history. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, his first year of eligibility.

San Diego Mesa College is a public community college in Clairemont Mesa in San Diego, California. It is part of the California Community Colleges and the San Diego Community College District. It is the largest community college in the city of San Diego and the 16th largest community college in the state.

Tony Gwynn Stadium

Tony Gwynn Stadium is the home field of the San Diego State University Aztecs college baseball team. In addition, the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the independent Golden Baseball League used the park as their home field.

San Diego State Aztecs football Mountain West college team

The San Diego State Aztecs football team represents San Diego State University in the sport of American football. The Aztecs compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and the West Division of the Mountain West Conference (MW). They are coached by Brady Hoke and will start play at the new Snapdragon Stadium in 2022. They have won 21 conference championships and three national championships at the small college division.

San Diego Toreros baseball

The San Diego Toreros baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate baseball program of the University of San Diego, located in San Diego, California, United States. The program has been a member of the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference since prior to the 1985 season. Since 2013, its home venue has been Fowler Park, located on the University of San Diego campus. Rich Hill was the program's head coach from 1999 until 2021. As of the end of the 2012 season, the team has appeared in seven NCAA Tournaments, all since 2002. It has won four conference championship series, three regular season conference championships, and two regular season division championships. As of the start of the 2014 Major League Baseball season, 15 former Toreros have appeared in Major League Baseball.

San Diego State Aztecs baseball

The San Diego State Aztecs baseball team is the college baseball program that represents San Diego State University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)'s Division I. Along with the majority of the university's other athletic teams, the baseball team became a member of the Mountain West Conference during the 1999–00 academic year. Previously, they competed in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aztecs play their home games at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the SDSU campus in San Diego, California. The team was coached by Tony Gwynn himself from 2003 until his death in 2014.

James Clyde Dietz is an American former baseball player and coach. He served as the head baseball coach at San Diego State University from 1972 to 2002, compiling a record of 1230–751–18. After coaching the freshman basketball team and the junior varsity baseball team at the University of Oregon, Dietz was appointed as the head basketball coach at Lewis–Clark Normal School—now Lewis–Clark State College—in May 1971, but turned down that offer a week later to take the head baseball coaching position at San Diego State.

Charles R. Smith (coach)

Charles R. Smith was an American football, basketball and baseball player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head baseball coach at San Diego State University from 1936 to 1942 and from 1946 to 1964, compiling a record of 555–289–10. Smith was also the head basketball coach at San Diego State from 1945 to 1948, tallying a mark of 45–36, and the school's athletic director from 1947 to 1954. In addition, he served as the president of the California Collegiate Athletic Association and as a district representative to the NAIA. Smith was also a Brooklyn Dodgers scout for southern California.

Rick Bay

Richard M. Bay is a former American football player, wrestler, college athletics administrator, Major League Baseball executive. He was a football player and wrestler at the University of Michigan from 1961 to 1965. He also served as Michigan's head wrestling coach from 1970 to 1974 and as the president of the United States Wrestling Federation from 1976 to 1980. He has also held positions as athletic directors at University of Oregon (1981–1984), Ohio State University (1984–1987), University of Minnesota (1988–1991) and San Diego State University (1995–2003). He was executive vice president and chief operating officer of the New York Yankees for several months in 1988 and president and chief executive officer of the Cleveland Indians in the early 1990s.

Eric Matthew Valenzuela in an American baseball coach and former pitcher, who is the current head baseball coach of the Long Beach State Dirtbags. He played college baseball at Arizona State in 1997 before transferring to Pepperdine where he played from 1999 to 2001. He then served as the head coach of the Saint Mary’s (2014–2019).

The 1926 San Diego State Aztecs football team represented San Diego State Teachers College during the 1926 NCAA football season. San Diego State competed as a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) in 1926. They had played as an Independent the previous year.

2018 San Diego State Aztecs baseball team

The 2018 San Diego State Aztecs baseball team represented San Diego State University in the 2018 NCAA Division I baseball season as a member of the Mountain West Conference. The team was coached by Mark Martinez and played their home games at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
