Symons played for the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL), the Frankfurt Galaxy and Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe, and the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League (AFL). He was selected by the Texans in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL draft. He played college football for Texas Tech where he was a record setting passer. Symons never played in a regular season NFL game.

The team competes as a member of the Big 12 Conference, which is a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The program began in 1925 and has an overall winning record, including a total of 11 conference titles and one division title. On November 8, 2021, Joey McGuire was hired as the team's 17th head football coach, replacing Matt Wells, who was fired in the middle of the 2021 season. Home games are played at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.

He served as the offensive coordinator of the North Texas Mean Green (2016–2018), USC Trojans (2019–2021) and the West Virginia Mountaineers (2022).

On February 27, 2014, he was signed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Doege was Texas Tech's starting quarterback for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

The Red Raiders were led by Billy Gillispie in his first and only season as head coach. The team played its home games at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas and were members of the Big 12 Conference.

Jonathan Brian Weber is an American former professional baseball player. An outfielder, Weber batted and threw left-handed. Considered a journeyman throughout his career, Weber played professionally in minor and independent league baseball from 1999 to 2015. Weber also competed for the United States national baseball team, winning the gold medal at the 2009 Baseball World Cup.

The Lady Raiders, were members of the Big 12 Conference and played their home games at the United Supermarkets Arena. They finished the season 15–16, 5–13 in Big 12 play to finish in last place. They lost in the first round of Big 12 women's tournament to West Virginia.

The 2015–16 Texas Tech Lady Raiders basketball team represented Texas Tech University in the 2015–16 college basketball season. It was head coach Candi Whitaker's third season at Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders, were members of the Big 12 Conference and played their home games at the United Supermarkets Arena. They finished the season 13–18, 3–15 in Big 12 play to finish in ninth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 women's tournament, where they lost to Baylor.

Russell T. Whitt is the head strength and conditioning coach for the Tulane Green Wave football team in New Orleans, LA. He previously served as the head S&C coach with the Troy Trojans football team in Troy, AL from 2020 to 2023. He previously served as an assistant S&C coach with the Army Black Knights football team at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY in 2019 and as the head S&C coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team in Lubbock, TX from 2016 to 2018 and the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns football team in Lafayette, LA from 2010 to 2016.
