The Bosnian ambassador in Washington, D.C. is the official representative of the Bosnian government in Sarajevo to the government of the United States.
This section lists the ambassadors of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United States since the country's Embassy opened on August 1, 1992. Since its opening, seven people have served as ambassador, five men and two women.
The first ambassador was Sven Alkalaj, designated on April 5 and appointed on June 23, 1994, and served as ambassador until June 14, 2000. He would later on become a prominent diplomat, serve as Bosnia and Herzegovina's Minister of Foreign Affairs and as the country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. [1]
The first women as ambassador was Bisera Turković, designated on August 10 and appointed on October 3, 2005, serving until May 20, 2009. From 2019 to 2023, like Alkalaj, she also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. [2]
The current ambassador is Sven Alkalaj, appointed on June 30, 2023.

The implementation of the Dayton Accords of 1995 has focused the efforts of policymakers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the international community, on regional stabilization in the countries-successors of the former Yugoslavia. Relations with its neighbors of Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia have been fairly stable since the signing of the Dayton Agreement in 1995.
Diplomatic rank is a system of professional and social rank used in the world of diplomacy and international relations. A diplomat's rank determines many ceremonial details, such as the order of precedence at official processions, table seatings at state dinners, the person to whom diplomatic credentials should be presented, and the title by which the diplomat should be addressed.
Carlos Westendorp y Cabeza is a Spanish diplomat and former politician. He is the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and also served as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina succeeding Carl Bildt and was powered with upholding the Dayton Peace Agreement.
Sven Alkalaj is a Bosnian diplomat who has served as Bosnia and Herzegovina ambassador to the United States since June 2023. He previously served as the Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations from 2019 to 2023. Alkalaj also served as the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2007 until 2012. He held the post of executive secretary of UNECE between 2012 and 2014 as well.
Bisera Turković is a Bosnian diplomat and politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2019 to 2023. She was the first female foreign minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Herro Kader Mustafa Garg is an American diplomat who had served as the United States ambassador to Bulgaria from October 2019 to February 2023. She is the current nominee to be the next US Ambassador to Egypt.
The relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are unofficial because Bosnia and Herzegovina's central government has not recognized Kosovo as an independent state, essentially through the veto of the Bosnian Serb-dominated Republika Srpska. Bosniak and Croat members of the Presidency want to recognise Kosovo, but Serb members refuse. Bosnia and Herzegovina's constitution requires consensus among all three members in order to perform such an action. Bosnia-Herzegovina remains the only country of the former Yugoslavia that does not recognize Kosovo's independence.
Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser is a Qatari diplomat and the former permanent representative of Qatar to the United Nations, appointed on 11 September 1998. Prior to this office at the United Nations, Al-Nasser had served as the ambassador to Jordan from 1993. He worked for his country's foreign affairs department beginning in November 1972. He was the President of the Sixty-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly from 14 September 2011 to 18 September 2012.
Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri is a former assistant secretary-general at the United Nations and the former deputy executive director of UN Women. Prior to her 15-year stint at the United Nations, she served as an Indian diplomat for 28 years. From 1999 until 2002, she was India's Ambassador to Hungary, while also concurrently accredited to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hans Сhristian Friedrich Schmidt is a German politician of the centre-right Christian Social Union (CSU). He is the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, having assumed office on 1 August 2021.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is an Indian diplomat and politician serving as the Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India since 30 May 2019, became the second ever diplomat to be appointed as External Affairs minister, after Natwar Singh. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha since 5 July 2019. He previously served as the Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018.
Othman Jerandi is a Tunisian politician and diplomat currently serving as the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs since September 2020. He previously held the role from March 2013 to January 2014.
Richard Merrill Mills Jr. is an American diplomat who serves as the United States deputy ambassador to the United Nations. He served as the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires and Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations between January 20, 2021, and February 24, 2021, when Linda Thomas-Greenfield became ambassador. In July 2022, he was announced as the nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to Nigeria.
Enrique A. Manalo is a Filipino diplomat currently serving as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs under the Marcos administration since July 1, 2022. He previously served in an acting role under the Duterte administration from March 9 to May 17, 2017 when Perfecto Yasay Jr.'s ad-interim appointment confirmation was rejected by the Commission on Appointments due to citizenship issues. He also previously served as Philippine Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2011 to 2016, Undersecretary for Policy of the Department of Foreign Affairs from 2016 to 2020, and the 21st Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations from 2020 to 2022.
Anvar Sarvarovich Azimov is a Russian politician and diplomat. He served as Ambassador to Croatia from 2015 until August 2020.
The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Budapest is the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Hungary.
