The office of Chancellor of the University of Houston System, held by Renu Khator, was created with the establishment of the University of Houston System in 1977 as the chief executive officer of the university system.

Since 1997, the chancellor of the University of Houston System has also held the position of President of the University of Houston, thus making it a dual office.

Renu Khator

Renu Khator is the eighth chancellor of the University of Houston System and the thirteenth president of the University of Houston. She is the first foreign-born president of the university, and the second woman to hold the position. Khator is also the first Indian American to lead a major research university in the United States.

Philip Guthrie Hoffman American academic (1915–2008)

Philip Guthrie Hoffman was the fifth president of the University of Houston, and the first chancellor of the University of Houston System. While at the university, he was instrumental in obtaining state affiliation, transitioning to a racially integrated status, and expanding enrollment in multiple locations. Hoffman also served as president of the Texas Medical Center. Prior to his appointment as president of UH, he was a professor and administrator for several universities.

Glenn Goerke

Glenn Allan Goerke was an American academic who was President/Chancellor of the University of Houston, the University of Houston–Clear Lake, the University of Houston–Victoria, and Indiana University East. Goerke also served as an interim chancellor of the University of Houston System. He held an undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University, and a doctorate from Michigan State University.

The Millennium Leadership Initiative or MLI is a premier higher education leadership development program. Originally created by the African-American presidents of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to help prepare traditionally underrepresented groups for university and college presidencies and chancellorships. The program is one of the most successful higher education programs and has expanded and is now open to all under-represented populations and participants need not be from AASCU member institutions. MLI has partnered with Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) and the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities to expand its reach to faculty and administrators that are interested in moving to upper administrative positions.

University of Houston Physics Department

The Department of Physics at the University of Houston is a department of the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics performing research traditional fields such as High Energy Physics and Condensed Matter Physics, Material Science, and Biological Physics, but also topics like Seismic and Medical Imaging. With its physics program, the University of Houston physics department placed 60 in the 2010 United States National Research Council rankings. The Department works together closely with the Texas Center for Superconductivity.
