British Academy National academy of humanities and social sciences

The British Academy is the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. It was established in 1902 and received its royal charter in the same year. It is now a fellowship of more than 1,000 leading scholars spanning all disciplines across the humanities and social sciences and a funding body for research projects across the United Kingdom. The academy is a self-governing and independent registered charity, based at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace in London.

National Endowment for the Humanities Agency of the US government supporting the humanities

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency of the U.S. government, established by the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965, dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. The NEH is housed at 400 7th St SW, Washington, D.C. From 1979 to 2014, NEH was at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. in the Nancy Hanks Center at the Old Post Office.

David Cannadine British author and historian

Sir David Cannadine is a British author and historian who specialises in modern history, Britain and the history of business and philanthropy. He is currently the Dodge Professor of History at Princeton University, a Visiting Professor of History at Oxford University, and the editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. He has been the President of the British Academy since 2017, the UK's national academy for the humanities and social sciences. He also serves as the Chairman of the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in London and Vice-Chair of the Editorial Board of Past & Present.

Marilynne Robinson American novelist and essayist

Marilynne Summers Robinson is an American novelist and essayist. Across her writing career, Robinson has received numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2005, National Humanities Medal in 2012, and the 2016 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. In 2016, Robinson was named in Time magazine's list of 100 most influential people. Robinson began teaching at the Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1991 and retired in the spring of 2016.

Caroline Walker Bynum, FBA is a Medieval scholar from the United States. She is a University Professor emerita at Columbia University and Professor emerita of Western Medieval History at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. She was the first woman to be appointed University Professor at Columbia. She is former Dean of Columbia's School of General Studies, served as President of the American Historical Association in 1996, and President of the Medieval Academy of America in 1997–1998.

Michael N. Hall American-Swiss scientist

Michael Nip Hall is an American-Swiss molecular biologist and Professor at the Biozentrum University of Basel, Switzerland.

The Leverhulme Medal and Prize is awarded by the British Academy every three years 'for a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding in a field within the humanities and social sciences'. It was first awarded in 2002 and is funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Matthias Tschöp German neuroendocrinologist (born 1967)

Matthias H. Tschöp is a German physician and scientist. He is the chief executive officer and scientific director of Helmholtz Zentrum München, German Research Center for Environmental Health. He is also Alexander von Humboldt Professor and Chair of Metabolic Diseases at Technical University of Munich and serves as an adjunct professor at Yale University.

The British Academy presents 18 awards and medals to recognise achievement in the humanities and social sciences.
