Not all governors live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 34 deceased governors, 14 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 20 did not (including both governors who died in office, and 18 others). George C. Perkins became the oldest living governor when Romualdo Pacheco died in 1899 and remained so until his death in 1923, for a record single period of 24 years and 34 days. Henry Markham became the oldest living governor after the death of George C. Perkins, but he survived Perkins by only 225 days.
On one occasion the oldest living governor lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the inauguration of a governor who was older. Peter H. Burnett lost this distinction when John Bigler was inaugurated, but when Bigler died in 1871, Burnett regained it again until his own death in 1895 for a total record period of 25 years and 188 days.
Ronald Reagan was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 85 years, and 10 days. Hiram Johnson, who was 78 years, and 338 days old when he died, was the oldest governor to die without ever acquiring this distinction. Goodwin Knight who died on May 22, 1970 was the most recent governor to die without ever acquiring this distinction.

The governor of California is the head of government of the U.S. state of California. The governor is the commander-in-chief of the California National Guard and the California State Guard.
John McDougal was an American politician who served as the second Governor of California from January 9, 1851 until January 8, 1852. Prior to this, he served from 1849 to 1851 as the first Lieutenant Governor of California.
John Bigler was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat. A Democrat, he served as the third governor of California from 1852 to 1856 and was the first California governor to complete an entire term in office, as well as the first to win re-election. His younger brother, William Bigler, was elected governor of Pennsylvania during the same period. Bigler was also appointed by President James Buchanan as the U.S. Minister to Chile from 1857 to 1861.
The first lady of California or first partner of California is the spouse of the governor of California if they have one. The role of the spouse of the governor of California has never been codified or officially defined. The spouse figures prominently in the social life of the state, and some spouses have been assisted with a staff in the Executive Office of the Governor. As of 2019, all the state's governors have been men, and not all of them were married while in office.
