The Mayor of Bhopal is the first citizen of the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh state of India. The mayor is the head of the civic body of Bhopal called Bhopal Municipal Corporation. For proper functioning of the corporation the mayor is supported by an officer called 'commissioner' who is vested with the required executive powers. [1] The incumbent and tenth mayor of Bhopal is Malti Rai of the Bhartiya Janta Party. [2]

Roles and Responsibilities

The mayor of Bhopal is city's first citizen and the head of the city's civic body, the "Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC)". He presides over the council meetings and takes decisions for the development of the city. For proper functioning of the corporation, he is supported by an officer who is appointed by the state government and designated as 'commissioner' who is vested with the required executive powers. [1] The mayor is given a place of prominence at civic, government and social functions. The state government invites the mayor to receive the foreign dignitaries visiting the city. The post of mayor is considered as an important political milestone for a city politician. [3]

Election

The mayor of Bhopal is elected directly by the citizens of Bhopal. Till 1998 the mayors in the state of Madhya Pradesh civic bodies were elected by the corporators. But in 1998, direct election of Mayor was introduced by the then state government. This decision was reversed by the subsequent government in September 2019. However the present government has again decided to have direct election of mayors of the civic bodies in the state. [4] There are a total of 85 corporators in the civic body. In 2022 elections the Bhartiya Janta Party emerged as the party in power with 58 seats, while Congress party won 22 seats and independents won 5 seats. [5]

Incumbent

The current mayor of Bhopal is Malti Rai of the Bhartiya Janta Party. She is the tenth mayor of the city. [2] She is a former corporator. She did her intermediate education from Janta Kanya Umavi Shala Bina. She did her Bachelor's in Arts and Master's in Arts from Sofia College Bhopal. [6]

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is the civic body that governs Pimpri-Chinchwad which includes Pimpri, Akurdi, Chinchwad, Nigdi, and the remainder of the northwestern city limits of Pune, India. It was established on 11 October 1982. It governs an area of 181 km2 with a population of 1.72 million. The executive power of the PCMC is vested in the Municipal Commissioner, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer appointed by the Government of Maharashtra. The position is held by Shekhar Singh (IAS) during the pandemic in late December 2020. The general body of the PCMC consists of 128 directly elected councilors, popularly known as "corporators", headed by a mayor. Rahul Jadhav (BJP) was elected as the mayor and Sachin Chinchwade (BJP) as the deputy mayor in August 2018. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the Municipal Corporation for the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. It is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city of Bhopal. BMC administers an area of 463 km2. BMC is headed by Kolsani V.S. Choudhary (IAS) as the Commissioner and Alok Sharma as the Mayor. In August 2014, the corporation became one of India’s first municipal corporations to automate citizen services, working with German software company SAP SE for the purpose.

Sudha Jain is an Indian politician from the Sagar city of the state of Madhya Pradesh. She represents the Bharatiya Janata Party. She won the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections consecutively for three terms i.e. 1993, 1998 and 2003 from the Sagar constituency. She was also a minister in Madhya Pradesh Government in 2007. She was the first woman MLA from Sagar constituency. She was denied ticket in the 2008 election and the then district Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) president Shailendra Jain filled in her seat. She is a lawyer by profession.

During the same tenure in 1978 – 1980 he served as Minister for Higher Education, in Government of Madhya Pradesh in the Sakhlecha ministry. Mr. Virendra Kumar Sakhlecha was the then chief minister. Second time, in 1989, Mr. Yadav again defeated Patel from the same constituency.

Vishvas Sarang is an Indian politician from Madhya Pradesh associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a member of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Narela in Bhopal district. He first served as a corporator of the then Bhopal South Vidhansabha constituency from the same Bhartiya Janta Party. He belongs to Kayastha Hindu community. Sarang served as the minister for Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation and Panchayat and Rural Development in Madhya Pradesh under chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan from 2013 to 2018.

Rajni Tiwari is an Indian politician, a Minister of State in the Government of Uttar Pradesh and a member of the 18th Legislative Assembly. She represents the Shahabad constituency and is a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party.

Anurag Singh is an Indian politician and a member of Legislative Assembly, Uttar Pradesh of India. He represents the Chunar constituency in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. Anurag Singh is Bhartiya Janta Party MLA from Chunar assembly of district Mirzapur for the second consecutive time. He is the son of Om Prakash Singh, ex BJP Uttar Pradesh State President.

In India, a mayor heads a municipal corporation which governs respective Indian towns and cities. The mayor of a city is the first citizen of that city. Municipal corporation mechanisms in India was introduced during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, later followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. However the process of introduction for an elected President in the municipalities was made in Lord Mayo's Resolution of 1870. Since then the current form and structure of municipal bodies followed is similar to Lord Ripon's Resolution adopted in 1882 on local self-governance. The 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 was introduced providing for the transfer of 18 different powers to urban local bodies, including the election of a mayor and to recognise them which included municipal corporations, Nagar Panchayats, Municipal Councils.

2022 Madhya Pradesh local elections were held in July. The elections to 347 municipalities in Madhya Pradesh were held in two phases. On 6 July, polling was held for the 133 local bodies, while the polling in 214 local bodies was held on 13 July. In the second phase on 13 July, polling was held in five municipal corporations, 40 municipal councils and 168 nagar parishads.

Chaudhary Mukesh Singh Chaturvedi is an Indian politician belonging to the Bhartiya Janta Party predominantly working in Madhya Pradesh. He is currently serving as the state vice president for Bharatiya Janata Party, Madhya Pradesh since January 2021 and is in-charge of Sagar Division, comprising six districts. Chaudhary, a prominent figure in the Chambal division, represented Mehgaon Constituency in the 14th Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly and prior to that, he had served as the Chairman of Bhind Nagar Palika Parishad between the years 1999–2004.
