The Bangladesh quota reform movement has been organized to demand a reduction in the quota for government jobs and a recruitment system based on merit. [1] [2] Since 2013, there have been a total of three quota reform movements in the country: in 2013, in 2018, and most recently in 2024. The 2024 movement was particularly violent and resulted in numerous casualties. According to various news reports, over 266 people have been killed in the protests so far in 2024. [3] [4] [5]

Protesters

  1. Abu Sayed - was a 12th batch student of the English department at Begum Rokeya University and one of the main coordinators of the university's quota movement. [6] He was killed by gunshot fired by police during clash between police and the protesters. [7]
  2. Wasim Akram - was a student of Chittagong College and the joint convener of the college unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal. [8]
  3. Faisal Ahmed Shanto, 24, was a student of Omargani M.E.S College. [9]
  4. Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho - was a talented student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP). [10] He was a renowned freelancer in freelance marketplace Fiverr , who offered their condolences on social media following his death.
  5. Tahir Zaman Priyo, 35, a journalist shot by police during protests at Science Lab area of Dhaka [10] [11]
  6. Ridowan Sharif Riyad, a first-year student in the English department at Tongi Government College. [10]

Rudra Sen, a second-year student in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, drowned while trying to cross a canal with several friends in search of a safe shelter during a police chase amidst clashes between students and police and Chhatra League members during the quota reform movement on July 18.   15. Farhan Faiyaz Ratul, was a class-XI student of Dhaka Residential Model College has been killed during a clash with the police and the Awami League men on 18th July, 2024 [19]
  16. Shaikh Ashabul Yamin, was a student of the computer science department of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) university murdered on 18th July, 2024 in Savar during a clash with AL members, their associate bodies, police, and BGB members. [20]
  17. Rakib Hossain Rajib, was a student of Textile Engineering in Southeast University, shot dead by Police while he was in procession in Dhaka on 5 August, 2024. He was involved in the anti-quota movement from the very beginning. [21]
  18. Jahiduzzaman Tanvin, 25, talented engineering graduate of Islamic University of Technology and CTO, ANTS Aerial Systems, killed when he stood in solidarity with the protesters after returning from an ATM booth. [22] He was an award-winning technologist.
  19. Rahul Islam was an eleventh-grade student at Raniganj Ehya Hossain School and College. He was injured by tear gas and gunshot fired by the police during protest on 4 August. [23]
  20. Tahmid Abdullah was a student of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology. [23]

  4. Selim Mondol, 29, one of three workers burned to death in an arson attack on an under construction building in Narayanganj which also housed a unit of the Highway Police. [12] [28]

  17. Jisan Ahmed, 19, a small-time water vendor in Dhaka shot while peeking outside after hiding during a clash between protestors and police. His wife Mishti died by suicide nine days later. [39]
  18. Jihad Howlader, 25, PG student at Kabi Nazrul Govt. College, Dhaka, shot while going to a roadside hotel for lunch [40]
  19. Imran Khalifa, 26, nightguard in Gulshan shot while heading towards a market [41]
  20. Maruf Hossain, 21, IT freelancer who just completed final exams at Kushtia Polytechnic Institute, came to Dhaka for an internship and was shot dead in Banasree by BGB. [42] [43] [44]

According to Human Rights Watch, 70 percent of extrajudicial deaths involving the police involved Detective Branch.

The 2018 Bangladesh Quota Reform Movement was a students' movement demanding reforms in policies regarding recruitment in the Bangladesh government services. Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad initiated movement initially began in Shahbag and on Dhaka University campus on 17 February 2018, and eventually spread country-wide by 8 April 2018. The movement rapidly attained popularity among students of different universities and colleges forcing the government to announce changes.

The Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal commonly known as the Jubo Dal, is the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

A series of rallies, demonstrations, and blockades opposing the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were held in Bangladesh from 19 to 29 March, on the celebration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. Accusing Narendra Modi of committing crimes against humanity during the 2002 Gujarat riots, the protesters agitated against what they alleged were India's anti-Muslim policies and India's interference in Bangladeshi politics. Protesters demanded the cancellation of the Bangladesh government's invitation to the Indian Prime Minister. The otherwise peaceful protests turned violent when the protesters were attacked by the supporters of the ruling Awami League party along with a crackdown by the law-enforcement agencies, causing the deaths of several protesters throughout the last week of March 2021 in Bangladesh. Initially launched by progressive student organizations including the Bangladesh Students Union, Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad, and the Socialist Students' Front, the demonstrations were later joined by the Islamic group Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Chhatra League, formerly known as East Pakistan Student League, often simply called the Chhatra League, is a students' political organisation in Bangladesh. But later it has been repeatedly accused of using torture, extortion, violence, forced prostitution, and killings to instill fear. At least 33 people were killed and 1,500 got seriously injured from attacks by BSL between 2009 and 2014. Number of fatalities rose to 129 between 2014 and 2018 while 31 people were killed in 2018 alone.

The Bangladesh protests of 2022–24 was a series of protests against the government of Sheikh Hasina between 2022 and 2024. Anti-government protests broke out in Bangladesh on 10 December 2022. The protests remained low-level, with some vandalisation occurring in November and December 2023. The 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement was an anti-government and pro-democracy protest in Bangladesh, spearheaded primarily by university students. Initially focused on restructuring quota-based systems for government job recruitment, the movement expanded against what many perceive as an authoritarian government when hundreds of protestors and civilians, most of whom were students, were killed. The majority of the fatalities were caused by gunshots fired by the police and other government forces, using lethal and deadly weapons, against unarmed protestors and non-protesting civilians, including children and pedestrians.

Sayed was a student of Begum Rokeya University and was involved in the protest in front of the university when the police engaged in lathi charges and opened fire on the students.

Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho was a Bangladeshi student, freelancer and activist in the 2024 quota reform movement. He was shot and killed while distributing food, water and biscuits during the protest. Mugdho's death is remembered as an important event in the quota reform movement.

He was one of the leaders of the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement, which later turned into the Non-cooperation movement, leading to Sheikh Hasina's government's fall.
